bottom line:
LB & Hawaii: 2-0 (with Hawaii inexplicably only the one MPSF this year, crazy)
LB with a 3 more matches vs. the MPSF
the UCSB result last night was such a huge 'swinger' and magnified the records - and really hurt the Big West, with UCSB part of a clear 'top 3' of the Big West, UCSB had a chance to back up the 2 Pepperdine wins, but didn't. the bottom 3 of the Big West really struggling so far (Irvine, UCSD, North) albeit North hasn't played much yet, and really haven't helped the Big Best cause. The MPSF is clearly deeper this year, with plausibly one of 5 teams (BYU, GCU, UCLA, USC, Pepp) that could end up winning the MPSF title or MPSF tourney title from what has happened to date, maybe a clear favorite will eventually emerge, just not at the moment
Irvine alone has 8 losses to the MPSF, which is really killing the Big West, would have expected Irvine to at least squeak out a couple more wins in those matches, Irvine will be a big drag on the Big West RPI, and the thing is they are winning sets in those matches and giving a glimmer they could win matches, and plausibly could get better by the Big West and eke out a win or two against the top 3 Big West teams

Bad night for the MPSF. Great night for the Big West. I thought the UC Santa Barbara match would be a tight one, but I thought Grand Canyon would pull that off on night one. Maybe they can do it on night two. BYU vs. UCSD was a tossup for me. I have no idea what to think about the rematch tonight. I could UCSD sweeping, winning in four or five again. I could see BYU maybe winning in four or five, but it will take a much improved effort from last night, and I'm not sure mentally they are in a place to do that right now. Not surprised Pepperdine lost at UC Irvine. Kind of expected that. Didn't think UCLA would win at the Pyramid, but I thought they'd take a set. And Stanford did beat Menlo, so that's good. It would have been a real bummer if they'd also lost. They salvaged the night!  |
