I count 14 players who signed letters of intent for some unknown number of scholarship years. While scholarship money is probably none of our business, from Tamas’ statement about looking for help and assuming he means scholarship level help I wonder which 3 are not getting money next year. My guesses are Bruna, Taylor and Diana. Both Taylor and Diana have already received 4 years. Both are incredibly important to next year’s success and finding scholarships if needed would be a pretty high priority. I have no idea how many years Bruna may have received.
Despite my sarcastic comments about stalking teenagers on Instagram, I am impressed by - and appreciate - the detective work that discovered our new commitment.

Very interesting get. One of 18 on the development squad for the Canadian National Team. And a 6'4" OH! And now Krista Van Sant as her future mentor. Bears watching, given how well the Illinois coaches develop their talent.
Also looks like Pasquale's list missed Jessica Nunge, senior OH. So I would assume that there currently are no scholarships available for any transfers. The flip side of that is that no one so far has entered the transfer portal, so the team is stable and virtually intact from last year's surprisingly strong finishing run in the playoffs.

After the next senior class leaves there will only be 10 scholarship players, leaving room for additional 2023 recruits. Of course, with the covid extra year of eligibility both Collins and Swanson will have an additional year available if they want to stick around for another year. The following year the additional year will be available for Terry and Holzman. Unfortunately for current high school players there will be several years in which scholarships otherwise available to high school players will be going to 5th year eligible players.

I think that is a big assumption. Just because they can take a 5th covid year, doesn't mean the school has to pay them. That is a big reason there are so many in the portal. Their current schools won't give them money so they are going somewhere that will.

Welcome to the Orange and Blue, Taylor!!
I've updated the roster on the OP with this new Canadian addition, including a link to her recruiting page.

Their current schools won't give them money so they are going somewhere that will. I agree. Coaches are going to have to deal with a very complex dynamic for the next several years. 5th year players pushed out of a B1G program may be very welcome at a Missouri Valley school, eliminating a scholarship for that school. Some 5th year players who have gone into the portal (or undergraduates whose playing time is blocked by a 5th year who didn't leave) are not going to be able to find a school regardless of how badly they want to play. Tough conversation for a coach to tell a loyal player with whom there is presumably a close relationship developed over a number of years their hoped for 5th year is not available because of a high school recruit. On the other hand, passing on a high school recruit to keep a 5th year runs the risk of a lack of depth in the future. As though juggling scholarships and planning future rosters isn't tough enough. Now a D1 coach has to become friends with the administrators who make graduate school admissions decisions, and graduate school academic money becomes a thing. Not to mention the possibility that NIL endorsement money provided by a loyal alum may take the place of a scholarship

Good mechanics. I suspect she has a lot of weight training in her future. I wonder if she is any relation to Kathy Deboer, played for Nebraska and is executive director of the AVCA. I think you are getting Kathi (not Kathy) Deboer who did play at Nebraska mixed up with the Kathy Deboer who is executive director of AVCA. Kathy Deboer played at Michigan State. Kathy Deboer was a middle blocker for the Spartans. I watched her play back in the day at the UIC gymnasium, back when teams would have tournaments with many teams competing. I have posted this before, but Deboer was such a personable player. Between matches at UIC I watched her giving volleyball skill tips to some youngsters interested in volleyball. My impression was that she would make a great coach. Which she was later at the University of Kentucky.

I really liked Kathy's broadcast analysis during Illinois's tournament games against West Virginia and Kentucky. Super knowledgeable, polished, and easy to listen to. I don't know if she regularly does broadcasts but I thought she was awesome.

How many volleyball Deboers can there be? At least our recruit is not named Cathy/Kathy/Kathi.
TV announcer Deboer was terrific, even with the homer play-by-play guy, who also was ok. Just re-watched the match earlier this week. It was as much fun as the first time, although not as anxiety producing.

A couple pins from our transfer wishlist committed elsewhere today. Charley Niego went to UNC and Courtney Buzzerio went to Pitt. Fingers crossed we get someone else on the pins for 2022.

Thanks for the 2022 roster. From the outside, it looks again like an NCAA tournament squad at worst, as long as multiple injuries do not hit (I hope Bruna gets healthy and all the rest get and stay so), and one with a lot of potential upside if it gets healthy.

Maybe it was just a case of wishful thinking, but I held out hope for Buzzerio until I saw her image in a Pitt uniform. I dunno, but my thoughts were for her own personal development as a player coming to Illinois might be a good move for her. She obviously wanted the limelight and experience of playing for a top national title-contending team. The Shakespearian phrase, 'Now is the winter of our discontent' continues to echo in my head as I ponder all of the athletes who want to play somewhere other than where they were last season. The effect would seem to be that the strong teams will get stronger and the rest who had top players leave their programs most likely will be weakened. I am very happy to welcome Taylor De Boer for the 2023 season!

If this was a men's basketball or football thread we would now be declaring neither is really very good and would not have helped. We need to improve our rationalizations!

There is a bit of that on VT, but do not ask me to specifically point to who and where. Buzzario was going to improve the team wherever she landed. Are volleyball fans appreciably a better lot than men's basketball and football fans? I know I am a self-proclaimed 'fanatic' rather than simply a 'fan'.
