Hord and Shaff connection on regular middle quicks would be just fine. Yes, Shaff needs to fine tune that connection, but much of that was the hitters' inability to do much with sets even when they were good. This is just not true in the slightest. Myers was a fantastic hitter at Maryland. Coaching staff clearly knew that Schaff's regular middle quick set was broken, and would take time to repair. That's why they made the conscious decision to not set the middles very much in the spring and fall 2021 seasons. Was she though?? My post is not nearly as inaccurate as you'd like to portray it. I agree that since the connection was not great and that even when it was, the middles weren't super effective, that the best strategy was to focus on the pins. Especially since with Samedy being so effective on the right they were able to keep the block fairly honest even without the middles terminating. Please also keep in mind that I wrote Shaff and Hord "will" be fine. I think the next eight months will be huge for Shaff's development.

NE 6'5" MB Schwarzenbach in the transfer portal. Showed a bunch of talent as a freshman. May have 2 years of eligibility.

Well, Schaffmaster can set the regular quick middle set as evidenced by Huseman's improvement at the end of the season. It was a two-way street. Also, Blossom wasn't that good of a setter IMO and Hord did just fine with her. Hord's good communication with the setter is something that I think will help her and Schaffmaster make the connection. Minnesota's team is mostly intact going into next year (knock on wood) which points to good team chemistry and a chance to go deep into the tournament again next year - those two things may weigh into her decision. I could go on... coaching, good grad school... Minnesota and Penn St are both massive, highly ranked, Big Ten research universities. Zero chance that there is a grad program at the U that Penn State doesn't have, that isn't some ridiculous niche thing (like Scandinavian Mythology, or something to that effect). The balls Husemann was hitting well (really getting on top of, which was awesome) in the last few matches were quick gap sets. Like mini shoot sets to the OH, just lower and faster. They were few, but very well done. That's not at all the regular quick middle set, which is right on top of the setter. I've seen no evidence that Schaff is capable of doing that, with any kind of consistency, so far. By far the biggest specific hole in her game. I do think Schaff can get there, through hard work and great coaching. I wasn't her biggest fan, but I have been somewhat converted. But will it happen by this spring and next fall? That is what Hord has to figure out, if she actually is even considering coming to Mpls. And just what gives you the expertise to describe Scandinavian Mythology as "a ridiculous niche thing"? The reading I've done on the topic indicates that it fits perfectly at a "massive, highly ranked, Big Ten research" university, research performed and written about by highly merited scholars. If you can dismiss serious scholarship in such a cavalier fashion, your analysis of VB strikes me as most likely tending toward being potentially equally biased.

Minnesota doesn't even offer a Ph.D. in Scandinavian. Pretty sure Wisconsin is the only Big Ten school that does.

She has one year and did see the court during Stivrins' absence. But, if your roster construction allows, a shut down blocker with solid offense. She is a heck of a player if you have a scholarship for one year.

I read here somewhere that Minnesota is following her and Hord which implies interest. Apparently the Gophers want a one year middle for next year. We do have a good middle recruit coming in 2023 but if Ellie doesn't stay for her COVID year then we will be in the same spot with no depth at middle.

Do we know what's behind Laura Kasey's absence on the coaching staff page?

Do we know what's behind Laura Kasey's absence on the coaching staff page? I was wondering the same thing. I have been checked the jobs thread to see if it is mentioned but didn't see anything.

Do we know what's behind Laura Kasey's absence on the coaching staff page? You’d think they would make a post about it on social media if she was moving on. Maybe they just haven’t gotten around to it. She wasn’t on the fall coaching staff page either but was definitely coaching. As has been noted, she has a child under one year old, so maybe she’s taken a step back from some duties.

Loved watching Callie play, especially her blocking! She made good progress on offense, but never quite reached Stivrins or Caffey levels of play. I hope she lands someplace great for her, and gets lots of playing time—but I do have to say I hope the Huskers don’t have to face her as part of the Gophers!

And just what gives you the expertise to describe Scandinavian Mythology as "a ridiculous niche thing"? I have 12 PhD's in this area. One from each of the actual, major research institutions of the Big Ten. So obviously Iowa and Nebraska are excluded.

But when they took her off for spring she disappeared. So I’m guessing they are linked in someway. But I know she was there while fall was in season. She also removed Minnesota Volleyball from her bios on Instagram and Twitter so I’m guessing she’s out. It would be cool if she is going to be a head coach somewhere…

Do an outside hire? Time will tell I guess.
