And a high-end M1 transfer from the portal. Didn't the Gophers have one of those with limited success? She apparently hates us VTers btw. who hates VTers? The player or the coach?

Shouldn't we expect this person to also have success in assisting in recruiting ? Hugh, himself, has become a pretty good recruiter and the coaches work together on that. Looking from the outside, it seems to me that the jobs that the coaches split up - like position coaching - is the primary thing that needs to be replaced. I totally agree.

Neb had basically 3 AA level liberos for defense. I am in agreement on Nebraska's defense. However, I just feel Hugh prefers 6 R pins who he loves to develop, which is his Achilles heel. We have had 3 players in the libero position move on from Minnesota in recent years. With this type of offense the need for more than a Libero and 1 DS is not needed at Minnesota and wtih injuries and personal health issues it certainly has taken it's toll on player availability during an entire season. Does that phrase "Defense wins Championships" hold true in Volleyball too? I say yes.

We just witnessed a Nebraska team with three starting Freshmen almost win the National Championship. We at Minnesota are still hoping/waiting for that kind of success to happen here, with our #1 recruiting class, which will be upcoming Juniors. I would love fans to chime in on why this particular Nebraska team had this much success at the end of the season. They almost pulled the upset, with a much less all around experienced team. 1 - Core of players surrounding these Freshmen - Stivrins is one of the best ever 2 - Coaching staff at Nebraska 3 - College by their reputation able to land 2-3 top ten recruits just about any season they want to 4 - All the above All of the above. I don't know how they did it, but I think it's a mixture of everything you mentioned and excellent coaching. Somehow Cook always has his teams ready for the tournament and they usually over perform. I don't know what his secret formula is. Maybe it's a culture thing. Once you win a natty once you have more confidence you can do it again. Our Gopher teams absolutely have the talent, they just need that extra bump to get them over that hump.

I have been a "TD-Tori Dixon" fan her entire career and feel bad she did not make a USA Olympic Team during her training time. Tori was one of the best blockers we have ever had at Minnesota. Hitting was not a huge part of her game and probably played more of a role in her downfall in not making the past Olympic starting team. However, outside of Washington IMO she could have.
Is middle hitting becoming at all more acknowledged at the High School and CLub levels today? I totally agree with those who said we need to transfer-in at Minnesota for next season a top notch MB/MH from the portal.

But you cannot deny the success the Nebraska program has had and will continue to have. Don't forget the calibre of player those first years were. Weren't all three USAV participants with a fourth USAVer on the bench? The incoming 22's for the Gophers are also of that calibre. Booth was on the team with Orr that won Gold in Egypt, Wucherer is a USAV mainstay, and Hanson was invited to train with girls that would be on a U19 team if there was such a thing. The Nebraska team went through a bunch of growing pains during their season and their girls rallied together to play some great volleyball at the end. They definitely peaked at the right time!

I agree with everything you said except that I don't believe it's possible to over perform. You can perform at the level you're capable of, or below it. It's like the way it's impossible to give 110%.

It's not like football where you have 9/10 assistants who are scouring various portions of the country, and the team is bringing in 20-30 new players per season. I feel like Hugh himself should be plenty able to get around to see all the recruits in person that he wants to target, to bring in 3-4 new players per season? Thousands of players to start from, though -- narrowing down such a large group to a smaller bunch that the coaches actually want to go after is the hard part. (Especially when keeping in mind that you're recruiting for the future, not for right now - with very little idea who's actually going to improve and who's going to stagnate, etc.) The 'scouring portions of the country' piece has to happen by coaches in all sports. They aren't just handed a list of "who they want to target."

Don't get me wrong, I like Hugh and I'm glad he's at Minnesota and hope that he's here for a long time. However, I'm still waiting on him to leverage his international connections and pull in some big time international recruit.

That would whittle things down quickly if you're only looking at say the top 100 to 200 players in a class?

I know nothing about this Canadian Setter coming in. I guess I am ASSUMING she will be on the bench a lot with Shaff being Hugh's #1 starting setter for up to 3 more years. However, a lot can happen in 3 years and we will see.
