Again, Hugh emphasizes a lot on 6R players and the setting. Oddly enough that is not what won Wisconsin the Championship nor what almost won Nebraska the Natty. I have had this conversation with a couple others. Does having a number of 6R players work in college? Or,is it better in the college game to have specialists - DS, OHs who only play front row, etc. So, do you want to share the consensus on the conversation? I personally feel it takes an entire team to win. Granted some players are going to be better than others at their position, but all must be performing to the best of their ability to win a Championship.

Hugh is known for developing and preparing players to play internationally. That includes developing 6 ro players. I'd assume this is why some players choose to play for him, for that overall development. I'm not sure how well this translates into winning ncaa championships, but I don't think that's necessarily his goal. He wants to develop players to their best and if they happen to be good enough collectively to win a national championship then great. But I don't think his coaching goal is to win a natty, it's more player focused not team results focused.

I said this elsewhere.... coaches want players who will be successful in their own program. Success elsewhere is just a bonus.

Of course he wants them to be successful in his program, but he's also developing them to play at a higher level which includes 6 ro. I think most teams would be better with 2 DSs and a libero in the back row but then that's not letting the hitters develop all around play. Who knows, maybe Hugh would be doing the same thing if he had all of that back row talent. He seems to value letting his hitters develop that 6 ro talent though. 🤷♀️ Not saying he wouldn't like a natty, but I think that's mostly his teams' goal for the year more than his own personal goal. Maybe I'm completely wrong. 🤷♀️

I've never read anything more selfish. I suspect this is not true at all. Winning (team) titles is the *only* thing that matters. Doesn't matter in the slightest if we have AA players or national team players, if we win titles.

Im confused.... who do you want to DS? You can't DS Samedy or Wenaas... (for this past season) THANK YOU, Avid. Wenaas is DS caliber and Samedy is a defensive beast and hit out of the back row, a huge part of our offense. This whole “MN needs more DSs because that’s what Wisconsin and Nebraska do” is tiring and illogical. We’ve used two DSs + a libero in past seasons (as recently as the start of the 2018 season and 3 seasons before that), it’s not like it’s something Hugh is reluctant to do…. he’s reluctant to take out players who should be playing back row just for the sake of using another DS.

Samedy plays good defense... Wenaas is going to be a better passer than any other DS on the roster

Hugh cares alot about player and team development. That means having them play through hard situations and learning from it. He has said it's the team who makes the season's goals, not him. He supports his players and team goals and helps them get there. I don't think there anything selfish in that.

You communicated it perfectly fine, he just saw a chance to complain about something else and took it. So unhappy all the time

Was fun to see some future gophers play in the Under Armour All American game on ESPNU today!
Wucherer started as a 6R player but that only lasted a couple sets with her shanking many, many serve receives. Once she focused on front row, she really had a wide range of shots and her athleticism was fantastic! Just needs some work in the back row… although, I feel like she had much better defense in the u18 competition… nerves maybe?
Booth started the match but didn’t see much playing time towards the end. I was hoping to see her crush some balls and get some blocks in… I don’t think she did either at all. I thought she would maybe start at Minnesota next year but from what I saw today, I really, really don’t see that happening. She looked very confused on where she was supposed to be on the court. This also could be nerves too! Hopefully the coaching staff at the U can work on her agility and volleyball IQ. Lots of potential with her.

C'mon Hord! We need you! Booth has the height and talent, just needs a bit more time.

Huseman is very capable of playing the other middle position.

Ok so is Wucherer pronounced Wooker like rhymes with Booker?
I've heard it a few ways.
Of course she is from Wisconsin so it makes sense a whole syllable would be missing. Ex. Shawano WI pronounced Shawno.
