Was fun to see some future gophers play in the Under Armour All American game on ESPNU today! Wucherer started as a 6R player but that only lasted a couple sets with her shanking many, many serve receives. Once she focused on front row, she really had a wide range of shots and her athleticism was fantastic! Just needs some work in the back row… although, I feel like she had much better defense in the u18 competition… nerves maybe? Booth started the match but didn’t see much playing time towards the end. I was hoping to see her crush some balls and get some blocks in… I don’t think she did either at all. I thought she would maybe start at Minnesota next year but from what I saw today, I really, really don’t see that happening. She looked very confused on where she was supposed to be on the court. This also could be nerves too! Hopefully the coaching staff at the U can work on her agility and volleyball IQ. Lots of potential with her. This was my same take on Booth watching her play a few high schools matches. I was hoping with an elite setter she would thrive. Her high school setter will probably end up playing on a mid range D1 team. Not sure how good the setters were for the AA game. Obviously setter/middle connection takes the most work and time no matter how good everyone is.

Her setter in the UA match was Alexis Stucky (Florida) and she was phenomenal and won the MVP of the match. She was the dominant setter in the match and actually had a nice connection with Singletary towards the back half of the match. In fairness to Booth the first part of the match was littered with sub par passing (Wucherer) they moved the line up around and really got it dialed in. It’s just one match.

My issue with Booth as I commented in the AA thread was her mobility and foot speed and overall coordination need a lot of work. I’d be shocked if she saw the court freshman year. But her height gives her a lot of potential at least.

I think you’ve got the wrong team, she was on team icon receiving sets from averi carlson who is also a very good setter

Carlson had great hands just could not find the right tempo.

I never played basketball, but so many of the 6'7" plus girls are playing both basketball and volleyball while in High School. More are now deciding to play volleyball post High School.
I have always wondered how much difference there is in the two sports when it comes to mobility, foot speed and overall coordination. Would love to hear comments on that.

Match aside (i don’t put stock into 1 UAmatch performance): Speed, coordination, and agility are traits that athletes either generally have or don’t by age 18. To my knowledge, she isn’t new to volleyball, has had access to top training opportunities via USAV, Colorado Juniors, and M1 for quite an amount of years now, and isn’t new to her height so there shouldn’t be an adjustment period there to get acclimated to her body granted no significant strength or weight changes. If she’s slow and lacks coordination that significantly limits her upside since there’s only so much the S&C staff can do to find improvement opportunities in her movements and explosion. Her greatest strength lies in her height. If the staff works with her to be fundamentally sound, have compact movements, and she continues to improve and evolve from a volleyball IQ standpoint (for example make smart reads across the net earlier in plays), hopefully she can become a nice asset a few years down the road.

Agreed.

Wisconsin pronounces drinking fountain like "bubbler", and other such nonsense.
So, you know.
