The end of the Hugh Era will be defined by the fact that you can have all the pin talent in the world, but you won't challenge for a B1G title when you're simply average in the other areas. Hugh was a great steward of the Minnesota Volleyball program -- but whatever comes next should be, if nothing else, more exciting. I’m hoping for a defensive minded HC. Improve the passing and serve receive all the way around, then those terminal pins can actually do their job 🤞 Yes, please. A better back court is desperately needed, like in the Hebert days. We have not been consistently elite in this area under Hugh.

He hasn't taken the program to the heights we expected. I cannot believe this team is underperforming as much as it is. When matched up against the 2021 team, the talent is better on the 2022 team but they are not playing to expectations. Put the 2022 middles on the 2021 team and the 2021 team is in the FF. The 2022 team lacks a Samedy, not just in talent but as a go to player who you can count on. Landfair should be that player but hasn't shown that she wants to dominate in the clutch. Wurcherer has the attitude and, should she stay at MN, could develop into that player for MN. Extremely frustrating. They may make it to the round of 16 but could go out in the second round. But, I don't see them going further than the round of 16.

I think the round of 16 is the ceiling. If they get a seed it'll be in the 13-16 range so they'd have to play a top 4 seed on that team's home court.

"Championship Behaviors" on sale now. In the fog of war at the end of the match Hugh got caught up in the amazingly lucky back line kill off a back row attack from Weatherington? Surely someone had to have known that she did take off from behind the attack line. Could Hugh have waited deploying his last challenge until the previous challenge by PSU was adjudicated? Maybe not? I've no idea. A deep breath, a cooler head, a bench player or assistant who saw the takeoff? Maybe we would still have lost the 4th, but it wouldn't have been on a bad ref's call. There was no change in rotation from the MN block, but there was no challenge available. As much as I love Hugh, I'd like to hear if he would critique himself for what transpired. Was that championship behavior? 1st) all coaches, all people make mistakes. So to throw his book in his face, considering all of his success feels a little harsh to me. Actually a lot harsh. 2nd) I think everyone that saw it the first time thought it was a fault. I was shocked on the replay at how far back she was. Hindsight is 20/20, had we won that challenge that may have been the set.

Kash is averaging 3.44 kps on .239 hitting on the season. They were able to block her early, but once she got going it was tough to keep her from scoring. I was more concerned with Markley going off, repeating the trend of opponent Frosh overperforming against us. We've seen it against Stanford, Pepperdine, Northwestern and obviously Purdue.
They are still at 12 in the RPI and hoping they should end up seeded in the 11/12 area and not 13/14. Their H2H wins against Oregon, Florida and Baylor may help for seeding in that regard.
At least at 12 they can slot in against a 5 seed, like last year and maybe make the Elite Eight again, if they can put it all together.

I am hoping we do see an ENTIRE NEW COACHING STAFF. Yes I have said it many times how our back court just has not produced like it should have under Hugh. The Houks play a huge role in that coaching and with the serving and setting. Many people here in Minnesota might want to see them stay on, but I feel it is time for us to see a complete new coaching approach to the game.
However, Pedro gets a pass for me this season. Love his involvement with our middles and the improvement in that part of our game here in Minnesota.

So, why isn't the RS being set more this season no matter who is at that position, when all Shaff did was set Samedy for two years? Because our right sides aren't as terminal as Samedy was. I agree that they aren't and Samedy could right the ship no matter what the set was like. But are Crowl, McWu, Wenaas and Hanson all that incapable of playing the RS and getting the much needed production in that position? Do most Minnesota fans feel Shaff has IMPROVED like they would hope she has in her third year as a setter? Our first two touches are very seldom both on.

Our first two touches are very seldom both on. Shaff has improved quite a bit but she is still not an elite setter; she has improved to a good setter and a great overall player. She might be great with a really good passing team. We're missing a quickness and fire from our team and I can only attribute it to personalities. Hugh likes a steady eddy, however I think you need a few firecrackers on your team to get your team fired up and compete. The backcourt has been a huge disappointment this year. I would be very surprised if this team stayed together after this sort of lackluster season. I would think it would leave a bad taste in their mouth to underperform all the time. But maybe they'll have a great tournament and we'll all be eating our words. Prove me wrong Gophs!

I definitely think Shaff is solid and has improved a lot, I genuinely like her as a player. Definitely one of the better blocking/defensive setters and a consistently great server. Her job just is pretty tough when the passing is sub par, she’s not incredibly fast or amazing OOS setter AND our go to player doesn’t take big swings at OOS balls. I think it also has to go back to coaching and what the people on the sidelines are telling her. If Hugh and co wanted her to be setting the right side more I’m sure they would be telling her that. There’s clearly been an effort to get the ball to the middle after the beginning of the season and it’s paid off. Must just be there isn’t much faith had by Shaff or the coaches in forcing the ball to the right, regardless of who’s there.

[/quote] That’s honestly what I hope to. I would rather have them at 10-12 range so they can avoid Texas as long as possible.

Hey, you know there are 2 more matches next week? The easiest way to improve that seeding is to win one or both of those! That is very doable for this roster, especially at full strength……just pass well enough to pump the pins hitting% into the 300’s and you can run the table.

Two tough matches next week. If Nebraska has a shot at a #1 seed then the Gophers have almost no chance...not in Lincoln. And I think that Ohio State got their bad game out of the way. But there is a remote, difficult to find path for the Gophers to win one or both matches. 1. Kilkelly needs to go to Arthur Murray Dance Studios and take a couple of quick lessons so she can find the positioning and rhythm to be consistent on first contact. No more two left feet. CC needs to return to greatness. All players (ahem, Landfair) need to improve their passing so they can stay more in system. Yeah sure, that's all it takes. 2. Landfair and Wucherer need to both have big games. It's time! 3. Shaff needs to mix it up more/create some deception. Don't forget those middles. 4. This team needs to find an on-court leader...now. They need to play with some fire and even some defiance. I think that the only who shows that fire is Crowl (but she does it in sort of a Minnesota Nice way). 5. Hugh should be unafraid to mix in a dose of Crowl or Hanson if things get stale...just like he does with the middles. 6. This is very corny, but how about winning one or two for Hugh? He certainly deserves it.

He certainly deserves it. 1. While CC and Kilkelly haven't been playing to the level we have become accustomed, I credit part of that to Landfair's lack of BR defense. CC and Kilkelly have to cover basically the entire backrow save the 2 feet around Landfair. 2. Would be nice if they could play better. Would be nice to actually see Landfair want to take over. 3. Hard to mix it up when you are chasing down passes. 4. Kinda late now for someone to step up. If there was such a person, they would have made themselves known well before now. Unless Wurcherer decides she's healthy enough and to hell with being a freshman and starts taking that role. I don't see anyone else doing it. 5. Can't hurt to mix things up. Rutgers could provide the perfect opportunity to see what Hanson can do. 6. BS. It's time for Hugh to start demanding better play from the team. He used to hold them accountable and seem to reinforce this at times during timeouts. Not all the time but enough to get their attention. I don't see that now. He created the current atmosphere, it's time for him to start using some of those championship traits he espouses.
