Got my copy of Championship Behaviors today! Excited to read it and learn a thing or two 👍 And congrats to the awesome awards for CC, Landfair, Booth, Wucherer and Shaffmaster! They worked hard this year and earned it. Wenaas deserves utility player of the year for all the unsung effort she’s put into the team as well. Hopefully we keep this momentum going in the tournament. They have all the ability to reach the final four, just need to play their hearts out and believe it. Shaffmaster is a good all around setter that brings a lot of physicality to that position! CC is CC! Her career is literally an era for Gopher and her departure will mark the end of it. I hope the Gophers go far in this year’s tournament. The Gophers winning it all would be so cool!

People undervalue a couple things about Shaffmaster but the biggest is her strong zone 1 defense.
She may not be the fastest setter, but that's not her goal at 6'3". She may not have the most accurate location always, but who does right now? Setting doesn't look great in NCAA to me this season overall.
Mel's game has improved quite a bit each offseason, IMO, and for some reason people downplay or ignore that.

Podraza was going to get the Setter of the Year award unless she got hurt or OSU finished near the bottom of the B1G. But, I think Mel has done a great job this season. Especially, considering she was working with 2 new middles and an unsettled position at OPP. And, that MNs passing hasn't been stellar.

Maybe not the quickest but she seems to read well and have good positioning.

Also, Milan Gomillion is in the transfer portal đź‘€ would love for her to be a gopher! I guess all the manifestation and prayers seem to work. We'll see if she ends up at MN.

From jwvolley's very informative thread: Name - Passing Grade - Good Pass% - Serve Receive attempt# - Pass attempts/set - Defensive touch % - Dig % - Good Dig %(leads to transition) Gomillion: 2.10 / 48.5 GP% / 332 attempts/ 2.81 / 28.7 TP% / 81.2 DP% / 63.8 GD% McGraw: 2.22 / 60.3 GP% / 385 attempts / 3.85 / 25.2 TP% / 76.1 DP% / 57.6 GD% Is Hiapo actually in the portal or was someone predicting it with the AZ schools having a lot of people in? Hiapo: 2.14 / 54.0 GP% / 589 attempts / 4.87 / 27.7 TP% / 81.5 DP% / 65.8 GD% And I forget where I read it but is Hinkle not using her Covid year? Hinkle: 2.13 / 53.7 GP% / 589 attempts/ 5.83 / 27.4 TP% / 77.1 DP% / 54.6 GD%

We need at least 2 right? Any combo of the 3 would be good.

She is VERY undervalued… someone decided that she was an awful setter and it caught on so everybody jumped on the bandwagon and refused to get off. However the improvement she’s had this season in particular in all facets of her game is really amazing. I’d never expect a 6’3” setter to read and play defense like she has been. She’s a very coachable athlete with the height and the knowledge to take her very far. I give a lot of credit to Houk for coaching her too

Was surprised Kaitlyn Hord was not first team. No surprise when in 11 less sets Carter Booth Had more blocks and kills per set. Out scored her 2.77 to 2.19 per set. (still would have liked her to come to Minnesota) Prediction Carter Booth will play 2024 in Paris. That's right you heard it here first. Write that down. (stolen)

(stolen) summer going into her junior of college? with Ogbogu, Washington, Rettke, Stevenson, butler, stivrins, Tapp all already fighting for one of those 3 spots? adding older ncaa players like hord, gray, hart, Tillman, and Oneal to that mix too? she's very good but dont think that's gonna happen for booth in 2024 lol

Be wary of anyone repeatedly posting negative things about one player/coach here on volleytalk. It has resulted in Shaffmaster being left out of the discussions about best setters in the B1G despite the fact that we have the second highest hitting percentage.
