Milan Gomillion, L/DS that was at Maryland, has entered the transfer portal. Led the Big 10 in digs per set in 2021. 2 years of eligibility left. Might be worth a look for the Gophers!

She is VERY undervalued… someone decided that she was an awful setter and it caught on so everybody jumped on the bandwagon and refused to get off. However the improvement she’s had this season in particular in all facets of her game is really amazing. I’d never expect a 6’3” setter to read and play defense like she has been. She’s a very coachable athlete with the height and the knowledge to take her very far. I give a lot of credit to Houk for coaching her too Yes, Minnesota fans fell victim to gaslighting where Mel is concerned. It started years before she even got here. Be wary of anyone repeatedly posting negative things about one player/coach here on volleytalk. It has resulted in Shaffmaster being left out of the discussions about best setters in the B1G despite the fact that we have the second highest hitting percentage. Wasn't it mostly from folks outside Gopher fandom and then it just seeped into every match thread?

From jwvolley 's very informative thread: Name - Passing Grade - Good Pass% - Serve Receive attempt# - Pass attempts/set - Defensive touch % - Dig % - Good Dig %(leads to transition) Gomillion: 2.10 / 48.5 GP% / 332 attempts/ 2.81 / 28.7 TP% / 81.2 DP% / 63.8 GD% McGraw: 2.22 / 60.3 GP% / 385 attempts / 3.85 / 25.2 TP% / 76.1 DP% / 57.6 GD% Is Hiapo actually in the portal or was someone predicting it with the AZ schools having a lot of people in? Hiapo: 2.14 / 54.0 GP% / 589 attempts / 4.87 / 27.7 TP% / 81.5 DP% / 65.8 GD% And I forget where I read it but is Hinkle not using her Covid year? Hinkle: 2.13 / 53.7 GP% / 589 attempts/ 5.83 / 27.4 TP% / 77.1 DP% / 54.6 GD% Based on these stats, it looks like Gomillion is a better defensive libero/DS but Hiapo and Hinkle are better at passing. We need at least 2 right? Any combo of the 3 would be good. My mistake about Hiapo, I thought she was in. I would also like to note that CC's numbers went up since the beginning of the season, when there were more gripes about the passing. Since I'm assuming it's cumulative, she must've made a considerable jump. I forget what she passed last year, in the 2.3s?

Podraza was always going to get Setter of the Year barring injury or a complete collapse by OSU. Shaffmaster only trailed Podraza in assists per set. Shaff had more blocks, more digs, more aces, fewer service errors, and same number of ball handling errors. And, as mentioned, MN had a higher hitting percentage than OSU. All in all, I felt that Shaffmaster earned the award. But, people were still complaining about Shaff late into the year because of preconceived perceptions.

I like shaffmaster, but there's no doubt Podraza is the better setter between the two of them. having landfair and wucherer is VERY different than having Gonzales and Moore lol. I dont think any coach in the country would choose shaffmaster over Podraza right now to be on their team. not a knock on shaff, Podraza might be the best setter in the ncaa

I can't tell you how many players get criticized on this site. Also how many times it is wrong. And by that I mean their volleyball knowledge is suspect in their criticism. Why do people pile on young (18 to 22) college players. Do any of you have daughters or grand daughters? Think about that next time you criticize and if you want people to talk about them that way.

Speaking of, I can’t *believe* that CC is allowed to be on the court for 5-1/2 rotations when she has *ZERO* kills!!!

Also posted in the match thread for MN v SLU… Mrs-JT has just tested positive for Covid. Because of this, sister-JT will not be coming up for the matches, and I will not be attending the matches either (even though I tested negative, at least for now.) Because of *that* I have two end-court premium chairbacks which I can’t use, and would love to sell. They are on the east end, where the Gopher locker room is, and where the team *normally* plays the first set (don’t know if that’s flipped for the tournament). Side-to-side wise, they are the seats closest to the team bench. I paid $35 for each seat (session.. covers all three matches) and would like to recover that. :/ Anyone want to sit *right* near the action? You will get to hear Matt and Pedro give advice/strategy. *Update* My neighbor was going with two of her kids (I got 3 seats for them in the chairbacks)… her hubby and their youngest kid are going to take advantage of my bad fortune, and make it a full family event.

The fact of the Shaff equation was focused on SSS from the get go SSS was a premier specialist as a setter: Quicker Softer hands Better able to better poor passes Less reliant on bump sets
So it was easier to focus on Shaff’s set locations But no need for blocking subs MN front wall is much more solid Shaff must be respected for ‘over on 2’ on higher passes
MN is supremely dangerous when passing and playing in system and that is key to future success

There is an article in today’s Strib about the tournament—I really like Jeff Day’s coverage of the team. Not sure if it’s paywalled, but here is the link: www.startribune.com/minnesota-gophers-volleyball-hugh-mccutcheon-ncaa-tournament-mcgraw-taylor-landfair-big-ten/600231879/ There was this from Landfair, which I found hopeful?: “Landfair said that McCutcheon helped her believe in coaching again, in the meaning of that relationship as a person and player. And with the news that he will still be at the U next season in an administrative role, she came to savor these final weeks together. "I feel like we have even strengthened our relationship," she said. "And I know he is still going to be here." So, that reads like she’s also “going to be here”?🤞🏻
