If a freshman beats Wurl out for the libero spot, I’d be super impressed. Wurl may not be the flashiest lib, but she seems to have a rock solid mental fortitude. Consider me impressed! Or maybe a little underwhelmed by Wurl. I called it. Her SR is too good. She held her own very well.

I had a sinking feeling this week that CSU and UNCo were going to be hard....both are upperclassmen laden and are solif mid majors.
I think the back and forth with setters is more detrimental than helpful. Both setters still look like club players....no real stable connections.
But I was surprised at how poor our defense looked....May played well but our transition defense was not good.
And we get 4 P5 schools at home this weekend and next. Lets hope that those loses teach the team and we see steady improvement. Hopefully we can play much better at home.

I would say they both UNCo and CSU have a very good team. Their setters and offence were very very good and fast - and they had a LOT of experience. CSU could have been a win, if the team had not had an absolute melt down in the 4th and UNCo had super aggressive serving and their setter ran a spectacular offence. They had an undersized middle that absolutely rocked our offence and %*$# down out attackers. We had lots of tight sets that gave our offence no options which was unfortunate and our back row was unstable - in both passing and SR. What’s the solution. No idea because our setters are freshmen and doing their absolute best!!!

Joe Sagula’s contract ends after the 2023 season. Is he expected to retire at that point? He’s had a stellar career, but the UNC program reminds me a lot of the Texas A&M softball program. They were always a solid team with a solid coach who began to get passed up by the game. She honestly should have been gone much longer than when she left this year, but A&M is known to let their coaches finish out their contracts and then retire on their own terms. Does that happen here too? Making it to 1 NCAA tournament in the last 5 seasons is certainly not an expectation for UNC, and I just can’t help but think Sagula’s time is coming to and end.

I’d like that one in my video collection:) like right next to 5’9 Nate Robinson blocking Yao Ming

I’m going to rekindle the thread from last year about Susan Clemens I have it under good sources that she continues to berate players and is creating a hostile team environment. Why Joe is not looking at that is beyond any reason any more. How many transfers do we need to have leave before someone addresses this issue?! How many people have to be treated for mental health before the program is evaluated for its missteps?! The University is on the mental health crusade and could really make an example of their commitment by evaluating the volleyball program.
I don’t think anyone should blame a single player for the way the 2022 season started. It is the team atmosphere and treatment of some players by Susan based on her whim! Breeds awful culture and is bringing the program to destruction. Seniors don’t seem to care any more about anything because they have this season and are done. But someone from the athletic department should talk with them to start a process where Susan’s mistreatment will ultimately stop. It is now well known what she has been doing and Joe needs to step in. Just watch her during games. I.t is so obvious. The program and tradition of UNC deserves better.

Definitely replacing setters mid set because the team is not doing well is very detrimental. We should pick a setter and allowed to go through growing pains. This back and forth with setters is literally creating nothing of value. Neither will develop skills or gel with the team to create good connections. But what worries me more is the transition defense. We make no adjustments to cover the open hitting lanes and step out of the area that the block is covering. The NORCo March showed it best. We could not catch any of their hits because we weren’t where we were supposed be positionally. We also played slow. Perhaps because we were tired after playing the same day already but we need to be faster or other teams will eat us alive. To be fair to the team, NORCo will go far this season and were fresh when they played us.

Yep Susan is back at it again this year and its evident she has forgotten our seniors exist. She pretty much is feeding the fires of certain players and theres a clear bias of who she likes and doesnt. It also is easy to see when things go wrong that some players also seem to act like her. Otherwise the team itself is close. Problem is Joe knows Susan is like this and just tells the girls they are being sensitive. Old school coaching that has expired at its finest.
Its not time to hit the panic button yet. Both teams in UNCo and CSU are upperclassmen heavy and have senior setters. Im disappointed we werent more competitive but wasnt shocked to lose with this being the first time the freshies play college ball in rowdy away arenas.
UNCo has been making an upward trajectory for a while and returned essentially everyone and took a foreign tour. And they beat CSU last year. CSU returned almost everyone as well. The connections and plays are already there for them. On top of having 2 new pins and an injured pin, we have a new middle' new setter, and possibly a libero change. That is a lot given preseason is only 2 weeks. We have all the individual talent you could want but it has to translate on the court in one functioning unit, not 6 separate ones.
Setting wise its clear to me Babic is the setter we need to be going with. Shes multidimensional and isnt afraid to run the middle and RS. She is also an offensive threat herself. We arent going to mesh and have a fluid system until the coaches realize we need to pick a setter and run with her.
Shaff has got to step up. I know she is nursing her shoulder but her court demeanor needs to be to claim this as her team. Her back row play doesnt look great through 3 games and offensivley she is struggling. She is way too talented to not clean it up. Niego is playing well but still makes some avoidable errors.
I like Sadie but Parker is giving us offense on the RS. Sadie blocks better. They may be switched in and out for when we need offense vs defense.
I agree our transition defense is more of an issue than setting. We seemed slow and out of place. That scheme needs to be adjusted and our block and floor defense need to be reworked.

The last time the Heels have beaten a ranked team was back in the modified 2020-2021 Covid year. As a fan of the ACC and Heels (and as a casual observer of the major Ups and Downs on this thread !), I went back to look. The Heels beat the #18 team in the country , Notre Dame, with Skyy and Kaya playing OUTSIDE, two experienced middles, one experienced setter in Archer running a 5-1 with Zinger on the RS, and Wurl at Libero. The same Notre Dame team with Niego playing outside. It looks like injuries depleted the team for the remainder of that year and next year (2021) the Heels had a decent year in making the tournament. No major wins in 2021 - but some good wins against mid level Power 5 teams. I would argue that Colorado State is better than half of the "Power 5 teams" and would finish top 4 in the ACC - as the conference is top heavy with Pitt, Georgia Tech and Louisville. So take it as you will - Colorado State is a better program year in and year out than UNC, but losing to Northern Colorado like this is a head scratcher. A 5 set loss would be different...but a complete demolition is another matter.

I don't know, but the result is a bit odd. A few UNC fans on here regularly claim to have inside information about what Susan is or isn't doing and what Joe is or isn't doing. And maybe they do. If anyone here really has information about abusive behavior they should report it to the athletic department at a minimum. I'm sure it would be investigated.
