volleyheels10, I wanted to respond earlier but only now I had a chance to look up some stats. More on that later. But in general I agree with all you said. Susan plays clear favorites and that’s obvious to anyone. Seniors don’t exist and only a few girls get treated properly. Watch the ESPN+ video of UNCo match and see how she took off the bench and yelled at Diaz. I don’t know if May called that ball but I have never seen a coach do that to a player in volleyball. I don’t expect any senior to care if this is how they get treated for years. I just hope that they don’t have mental health issues for all that yelling and mistreatments. Where is the University?! Similarly, Wurl is a steadying influence and a calming presence on the court, and while really good, May needs to improve her presence and demeanor. I have never seen her smile while on the court. If May replaces Wurl on a permanent basis I fear it’ll be rougher going than I expected. Interestingly, UCSB took a set from CSU and we destroyed UCSB. Although it’s hard to pull of 0-2 to 3-2 for two years in a row, we should have won CSU match. We were even up 15-10 in 4th and then stopped playing. But this was still a valuable lesson playing in front of 6000 hostile crowd. I’ll have to go watch a match up there sometimes. It looked amazing. Wish we had half of that here. The match against UNCo was not winnable. That team did not make a single serving error and they served very aggressive. Even the commentators on ESPN+ were very surprised. Apart from serving insanely they blocked us a lot. At the same time we looked tired. So I would chalk this one to an off afternoon. We can play against them just not on that day and tme after playing UCSB in the morning. CSU and UNCo play on Tuesday this week at CSU. It’ll be interesting who wins that as a some kind of measure of us. With respect to the setter, the stats are not even close. Babic has more assists per set, kills per set, digs per set, and points per set. Neither setter blocked much yet and serving aces the same. Babic is more versatile and puts points on the board. She is not afraid to mix it up and attack but somehow can’t get continuity. I wonder why coaches can’t decide with stats showing this. Bostic is a good setter and can play. It is a luxury to have both, but I can’t ignore the stats. Now to my favorite part: Shaff this year is hurt and I get that. But if you are hurt and can’t do what you used to do, go get healthy and come back. We have others that can step in. As mentioned before, a few years back, Sky played outside but we now also have Swain and Shea. Both are fast, can hit hard, and can play. Shaff’s body language is horrible when she makes errors. She snaps at others. Seems to be a negative influence on the team. She should be leading in praise of others. Her serving is way off. I would say, get healthy and come back when ready. The more we drag this injury out the worse she will be off as well as the team. As the best player and leader she really needs to be positive, supportive, and honest with herself and the team. On the right side I see Parker for a while. Swift is going to be a great weapon with some more experience. I would consider putting her on the outside too. She is quick and very athletic. We need to get her in games whenever we can to get more experience. She can play. Similarly, Mogridge has to become more consistent and active. She can score and block but seems to disappear at times. Transition defense has got to improve and our diggers need to understand how to read hitters and accordingly position themselves. Not sure these coaches can coach that since this has been an issues for years now. Overall some fresh coaching blood is needed. Mike is a great person and knows volleyball but he gets drowned by Susan. Joe is just an observer. So no good can come. The type of volleyball we play has lost its battle with time. Today everyone plays fast and constantly adjusts. We seem to be stagnant.

The last time the Heels have beaten a ranked team was back in the modified 2020-2021 Covid year. As a fan of the ACC and Heels (and as a casual observer of the major Ups and Downs on this thread !), I went back to look. The Heels beat the #18 team in the country , Notre Dame, with Skyy and Kaya playing OUTSIDE, two experienced middles, one experienced setter in Archer running a 5-1 with Zinger on the RS, and Wurl at Libero. The same Notre Dame team with Niego playing outside. It looks like injuries depleted the team for the remainder of that year and next year (2021) the Heels had a decent year in making the tournament. No major wins in 2021 - but some good wins against mid level Power 5 teams. I would argue that Colorado State is better than half of the "Power 5 teams" and would finish top 4 in the ACC - as the conference is top heavy with Pitt, Georgia Tech and Louisville. So take it as you will - Colorado State is a better program year in and year out than UNC, but losing to Northern Colorado like this is a head scratcher. A 5 set loss would be different...but a complete demolition is another matter. If Colorado State is "year in and year out" better than North Carolina, what happened when they played last year? I don't know, but the result is a bit odd. A few UNC fans on here regularly claim to have inside information about what Susan is or isn't doing and what Joe is or isn't doing. And maybe they do. If anyone here really has information about abusive behavior they should report it to the athletic department at a minimum. I'm sure it would be investigated. Colorado State has been to the tournament something like 28 out of 29 years, beaten some crazy good teams and has had some success in the tournament (as has UNC a few times). My point was that losing to them was not unexpected or a bad thing. The Heels won in 5 last year, 17-15 in the last set. Going out to CoSt in front of 6000 people and losing, while playing with a young and talented team - should be a good and positive learning experience. Sounds like the last match against Northern Colorado was not such a positive experience...

The coaching predicament is as stated. Mike knows what he is doing and can communicate...Susan cannot communicate so she yells. There is a reason Joe has switched her from coaching defense to offense and back several times....no matter who she coaches there is no improvement and no relationship built. Joe allowed Eve and Tyler to do it all. HE adopted that philosophy with Mike and Susan and they are vastly different.
I have to disagree on Maddy May. She might not be smiley, but she is fiery. She is a good teammate. Wurl is calm but her passing this weekend was not allowing us to do much. She has been very "off" so far. Hopefully she gets back in her groove. I feel that our entire defense has been much slower than even last year.
I have not been impressed with Shaff's demeanor and lack of leadership. I like Mabrey a lot, but as a sophomore, you have to move past the errors and bad sets, and own them and lift up your team. Its her job along with Merkler and Niego to feed the team and direct them, not pout in situations. Merkler had a ROUGH 4th set at CSU and did she show a poor attitude? Nope. I do hope she can heal up that shoulder. We do have depth that can be productive if she needs to sit to heal up.
Hands down I would put Babic setting and Parker on the RS. AS we have seen they can produce and the yanking players in and out as we have seen in past seasons is a disaster.

There might be growing pains with having a freshman setter but I also think that her confidence is only going to grow if she knows her coach believes she can pull through after making errors. It’s hard to play loose/relaxed when you think your coach is going to sub you off as soon as you make a mistake.

It’s hard to play loose/relaxed when you think your coach is going to sub you off as soon as you make a mistake. Its hard for the hitters to adjust from Bostic who sets low, fast and flat to Babic who sets a little higher but tends to be more accurate. They want to know why we are erroring so much, its because we are changing setters who are very different. I like Bostic and she is a great kid and player....but I think she still sets like club ball. You can get away with low fast sets because a lot of teams struggle at closing double blocks...aka seams. I feel like Babic giving the ball a little more height helps negate some of the location issues.

From what I see - Niego is very stable - doesn’t get excited but also doesn’t get down on herself or others. Kaya is always pretty up and likes to celebrate, same with Liv M. Wurl is calm cool and collected and KNOWS how to play the seam - which is what we were missing- but she also talks to and supports her teammates. May is very flashy and to me looks like a club Libero - a very GOOD club Libero but still……. I don’t think she is taking Wurl’s spot if Wurl is healthy. Diaz is so scared she is going to get yelled at that she is very quiet and seems meek on the court - same with Overbeck. They lack some confidence for probably good reasons. Mabrey was slow tired and grumpy all weekend and has multiple injuries and was cranky, which I don’t think is anything new for her. I get you don’t like to lose or play badly, but own it and get healthy and move on. Intensity is one thing, being cranky and showing it is another. The only one that is happy is Austin and doesn’t seem to play in fear- probably because she is a Senior and has seen it all before and decided she just want to play, have fun and win. This team has a whole bunch of potential but unless you get the defence in the back row figured out and get everyone healthy……. It is preseason and lots of players are already hurting. Let’s avoid the injury riddled years we have had previously and take care of the athletes.

Let’s avoid the injury riddled years we have had previously and take care of the athletes. This is spot on. If we have all this depth and Mabrey is struggling, why arent the coaches using it? I get Mabrey is their gold child, but she needs to be healthy down the stretch and we have 4 or 5 other pins on the bench. Its obvious that sitting would help her physically and maybe mentally reset. Susan has made players play timid. Yelling doesnt motivate all players, ask Lauren Harrison.... The defense and setting we gotta clean up. That simple. A healthy Wurl is a good reader of the game. I think May passes and digs better and made some good reads, but overall, no one was reading well against UNCo. Babic is the setter that has the chops right now so we need to let her develop consistent connections. And I agree, Parker, Kaya, and Mogridge seem genuinely happy to be on the court. And productive.

This is my favorite thread every fall. By far the most positive thread every pre-season and then the crash and burn is tough to watch. You must like watching train wrecks as well! That's because we try to have faith that our veteran coach, the optimistic assistant, and the clown assistant are going to take the oodles of talent and make something with it. But yet again it already seems 2 of the 3 are sabotaging that. Sagula will most likely get an extension. He is going to play the card with Bubba "just give me 3 years more with this top 10 freshmen group to develop," and Bubba will cave.

It shouldn’t be this way but we always have hope that we would learn our lessons and not repeat them and somehow we do not. Hope Bubba looks at that at least. It’s just a shame for the talent we have now.

If Bubba can’t see what’s going on with the coaching staff,,, maybe it’s time Bubba was gone The main sport that matters did okay in a year immediately following a coaching change. The day that women's volleyball will have the juice to determine the athletic director's job security will be the day that...well, never. That will never happen.
