I JUST FIST BUMPED THE GOVERNOR! which governor? Wisconsin governor - and UW alum, three times over - Tony Evers, no doubt.

It wasn't a barrage. It wasn't a difficult question. If she wasn't in a position to answer questions, she shouldn't have been there. I agree. If she was uncomfortable with the questions, then say "no comment." Blurting out "is this over yet," was her egoic mind at work, which is essentially unconsciousness. Let's hope she's able to reflect on this. egoic mind at work which is essentially unconsciousness? Is this the same meaning of," frustrated loser?"

No one "tried to get her to say" anything, they asked a question which is what happens in press conferences. And it was a perfectly reasonable question -- the reference was to her early hitting and the question was, what were you seeing, and what was it like going against that block? Sure she's upset, they all are. But if that's the way you're going to handle a question then maybe it's better to stay in the locker room. It has nothing to do with "realness". It has to do with stepping up and dealing with the situation, exactly like Cook and Stivrins and Hames did, in an extremely "real" and impressive way. Madden is a special person. No need to reply. Caffey was embarrassing and while I understand it, her attitude and inability to get past herself have no excuse. I've seen tons of press conferences from losing teams, including from our players, and they still have grace and respect. There is never an excuse to be disrespectful. Even with the worst question you can reply in a way that doesn't make you and your school look bad. I was hoping someone would point this out. I am a Badgers fan and I was impressed with how Nicklin and Stivrins handled themselves even through the tears. Kayla acted like a spoiled child who didn’t get her way. If I was a coach such as Karch I would look at this and think she doesn’t know how to represent her team in a good light, I would not want her on my team. She is not a young player so that would not be an excuse.

If we would’ve had a Michaela Foecke?, game over. not if Wisky had a Carlini. We can play "what if" all day. Eh, at this point can we just say Hilley >>>>>>>>>> Carlini?

Just got back from the match, what an amazing way to end the season and what a moment for Badger fans. Let me tell you--it has been a JOURNEY being a Badger fan my entire life leading up to this moment. One of my earliest volleyball memories was going to the Field House in 1997 and watching the Badgers upset #1 Penn State on Halloween night with over 7000 fans in the house. Two months later my first heart break was watching them go up 2-0 against Florida in the RF and losing in 5 at home. Next year they barely lose to Nebraska in the RF and miss an opportunity to play for a title in Madison. 2 years later they break through, only to go up 2-1 in the title game and drop it in 5 to their old coach. Fast forward through several very good Pete Waite years, several less good years, and then we have a new coach and somehow land (and keep) the #1 recruit in the country, Lauren Carlini. Sheff and Carlini create magic and get UW back to the semifinals, then pull off an all time great upset against Texas to reach the title match. The next match, they come up just short in a painful 4 game loss to Penn State for the title. The next year I really thought we had the pieces to win it all, only for Carlini to get injured in the RF and we drop to Penn State again in 4. The next year we lose earlier than hoped in 5 to a very good Florida team, and experience 1997 deja vu again in 2016 after losing to Stanford in the regional finals at home after going up 2-0. We say goodbye to Carlini and Co. and hello to a loaded 2017 class. By their sophomore year, we are back in the Final Four mix, but come up just short in the regional finals after a hard fought battle against a more experienced Illinois team. In 2019 we reach the title but stink it up in the finals, and lose to a dominant Stanford team. 2020 was supposed to be our year, but then obviously covid happened, and threw the season all out of whack. We went undefeated in our shortened schedule but looked out of sorts toward the end of the year and ultimately got swept by Texas in the semis. For 2021, instead of it feeling like "this is our year", it has felt like "this is our last chance." We lose Rettke/Hilley/Barnes/Loberg next year and while we're projected to be good in 2022, I don't think we'll be in the upper tier title mix. This year had its ups and downs but we flourished in the tournament and cruised back to the semis, only to be pushed to the absolute brink against both Louisville and Nebraska and we FINALLY win a title. Nothing about getting to this moment was easy for this program but man is the payoff amazing. 30+ years in the making and it has never been a better day to be a Badger fan. Thank you for to Steve Lowe for getting the program on the map in the early 90s and getting us to the regionals. Thank you to John Cook for taking us to the next level and making us a true final four threat. Thank you to Pete Waite for taking us another level and getting us to a title match. And THANK YOU Kelly Sheffield for elevating us to another level and finally bringing a title home to Madison. I feel all of this, every last little bit. I don’t go back as far as you - my “origin story” is the 2006 Halloween sweep of Penn State - but the highs and lows are there all the same. I love these people so much. The players, coaches, staff, alums - Every single one of them had a part in this. You forgot to mention that Claudia Rodriguez, the 2000 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, began the 2000 first game finals against Nebraska with what looked like the start of a career night. She had 4 kills, each with increasing strength, before she went down with a match-ending injury. She looked unstoppable. If she could have finished the match, and with her big block, WI might have had their 1st Championship years ago instead of loosing in 5 games.

in the off-season, someone on VT needs to watch the match, convert it to side out scoring, and tell the score and who one and how long it would have taken. If by "someone" you mean you, I'm all for it

I agree with what you are saying, and in a perfect world that would be the response that we hope our players would give. However, I know alot of incredible giving compassionate philanthropic athletes that are so competitive that they just need a moment to get things under control. She is obviously one of those and also deserves the kind of grace you are talking about just to get herself in a good place. Barraging them witih questions after a heartbreaking loss and expecting perfect gracious answers is just a little dumb. It wasn't a barrage. It wasn't a difficult question. If she wasn't in a position to answer questions, she shouldn't have been there. Yeah, I agree with this. I know the performers are nabbed by sports information staff (or whoever) to do these press conferences, but if you're going to be childish and add nothing of value, just don't go. It certainly wasn't a major thing, because nobody expects someone in that position to be happy, but it just wasn't a great look for her or the program, I didn't think.

Regarding the All tourney team Smrek rightfully was named MOP, without her, UW doesn't make the final and she hits .250 over the team average in the final. Which leads into the choice of Hilley being on the team. A setters job is to get the ball to the players who will give the team a chance to win. She should have been setting Smrek more, at least a dozen more times minimum. She had the passes but instead chose to chuck them out to Loberg and Orzol instead repeatedly. Loberg did well (not great), Orzol did not. Choices matter. Which leads into Hames. She set her team to a record 24 blocks by the opponent. Nuff said. Neither is deserving but got the mention solely on name recognition alone.
The liberos put the setters in the position to make the right choices with stellar passing. Yet neither is named, once again, libs get the shaft.
And finally Meneh, solely on name alone as well. Did awesome vs Purdue, shut down by Nebraska hitting .150 with 4 serving errors while Serena Gray hits .474 with an ace (only one block though).

The next time you tell someone that defense wins championships, give them a copy of this game. Wis .183 and Neb .141 Wisconsin played some great defense, Barnes was lights out.

Thoughts and prayers for the parents of these players. They must be absolutely dying on the inside. This is a great point. So easy to forget these players are people and have loved ones who care deeply about them. My heart was pounding most of the night, I have no idea how the parents can even stand it!
