Why are so many so optimistic about Stanford? Are there incoming freshmen expected to make a big difference? Or do people think the existing players will improve and/or the Cardinal will just be healthier next year?

A spring training for Francis some added depth in the passing department with Rubin and Pringle

Agree with the second part (not biased). ASU is returning nearly all of their starters (barring any transfers). As far as the favorite, I'm going to go with Oregon, with Stanford right behind. Adding Pukis is a game-changer for the Ducks. Not knocking ASU. I'd like nothing better than for Tomasevic to get to the top of the PAC. But why is returning all their starters such a big deal? They finished the conference 7-13. Are they going to all improve dramatically during the off-season? Are there new recruits that are going to make the difference? Normally I agree with this. Returning all the starters on a team that was mediocre generally indicates only that you will have another mediocre team. But the starters ASU is returning were almost all young. Lots of upside. And the one that wasn't young? The team's workhorse, Isanovic. A player pretty much any team would want to have playing for them.

Oh yeah, that was for team on the rise. As much as I love my Devils, they're not winning the Pac.

Wasn't really questioning anyone's judgements. Just trying to better understand the optimism. The mystery to me about ASU is how they had that incredible win streak in the middle of the season, I remember thinking they could go deep in the tournament.
They had consecutive wins over UCLA, Utah, Colorado, California and Stanford. After going 5-0, they lost 7 of the next 8.
But it seemed like there were a lot of weird anomalies in the PAC this season.

Or do people think the existing players will improve and/or the Cardinal will just be healthier next year? I think it's more about who is leaving from other teams versus what Stanford is adding. Stanford brings every starter back except Campbell, but there is a replacement for her (A. Smith) who should play at about the same level. The transfer portal could change things pretty dramatically though, so it is wait and see IMO.

The transfer portal could change things pretty dramatically though, so it is wait and see IMO. This. Plus our floor defense was probably our biggest weakness and Rubin (and maybe Pringle or Belardi) should help with that. Stanford had a lot of injuries in 2020 and 2021 so if they return to mean, it will be a major improvement. I think everyone hopes that both Leilah and Annabelle Smith will be available at middle so there shouldn't be a drop off there. Scoring may improve with L. Smith (who seems more offensively oriented than Vincini or A Smith, though she hasn't really played in college yet) and bc Miner will have more time to connect with the middles this spring. Francis missed some of preseason and didn't really get much chance to get used to playing OH before the regular season. She'd been a middle. So we hope that a spring and summer to work on OH skills will help. But I 100% agree with hammer and others that it's too early to make an educated guess until we find out who transfers in and out of all the teams.

Do you think that Stanford can find another Graduate Student Athlete like Madeline Gates?

Do you think that Stanford can find another Graduate Student Athlete like Madeline Gates? Gates was a unicorn. An All-American level volleyball player-slash-uber nerd who was accepted into Stanford’s grad Statistics program…and who happened to have one more season of eligibility left. That was a bit of serendipity that will not be easy to duplicate.
