It's an improvement over 2021, for sure, but the big issue is that 2021 only resulted in 2 seeds for the PAC, both of whom had to play road matches against Top 4 seeds in the Sweet 16. It's not a recipe for success. And there is a material difference between 79% and 77% win percentage, and I fear PAC is at risk of not keeping that up, as we have a lot of potential losses over the next two weeks. Week 3 has some tougher matches. OSU could drop 2, Oregon/Stanford go play at Minnesota/Penn State, USC could drop both matches to Hawaii, ASU has Colorado State and Baylor, Utah has San Diego, Washington has Pepperdine, and Northwestern (who isn't bad by any means), Colorado plays Arkansas.....That is a lot of potential losses in week 3. Now, if we end up winning most of these, GREAT! but it's a tougher run than week 2. You forgot. UCLA has LMU. And San Jose State is looking awfully scary right now.

Like, seriously, how can you not look at the LA schools the last half decade and just be disappointed? It’s just so freaking mediocre. I shutter to think what Washington could have done with a May, Fleck, Botkin, Lanier… 🙄 What a change it has been from prior to the last half decade. They were still not the complete powerhouse they had been even in the years immediately prior, but, they were making at least some postseason noise. USC made the Elite 8 at least once every 3 years under Mick from 2002-2017 and 11/17 of his seasons total (the non elite 8 appearances were 05, 06, 08, 09, 14, 16) Yet people still were screaming for him to be fired every year. I blame them. He had his flaws but we knew USC admin could seriously make the situation worse. The program has been a disappointment since then.

Mick always fielded competitive teams in a less than ideal fan environment and a work environment that had to be horrifying.

Mick's last year he lost to UNI and Kentucky in this same tourney, was subsequently swept by Maryland and people were calling for his head. All you remember now is having match point at Florida to go to the final four, but never getting it.

Who has the most potential as a women’s volleyball program between UCLA and USC? Let’s say both jobs opened up at the same time, and both head coaching positions and all the support staff were going to be paid the same (although if one would be willing to pay substantially more, in your opinion, include that, too), who would a high profile coaching hire prefer? Assuming no connections to either school.

Yesterday, the PAC was 1st in conference RPI. Since then has moved to 2nd, but still slightly ahead of the B1G. More than anything, need to get rid of B1G bias (especially when it comes to tourney selection and placement) and earn some PAC respect again. Cheers to a successful PAC weekend! ncaastats.figstats.net/conf_rankings.phtml

That would help a bunch, IMO.

Assuming no connections to either school. I think either school has enormous untapped potential. USC is more aggressive in promoting its image and brand, but that aggressiveness is a major source of its problem (USC is currently embroiled in a bribery and corruption trial affecting the LA mayoral race). USC has the Galen Center, a better, more convenient venue than Wooden, its campus is more central and accessible, but it’s not the best neighborhood (becoming more gentrified, but reputations linger). UCLA has a beautiful campus in one of the most expensive zip codes, and one of the most congested traffic areas. Both have great academic reputations and programs, although I give UCLA the overall edge in that category. As a coach, I would choose USC if my interest was making a name for myself, and UCLA if I wanted to build a legacy.

When’s the last time a power 5 conference didn’t have a seeded team? Asking for a friend…

Maybe Pac12 isn't doing as bad as we thought they were? According do the non-conf W/L ratio, Pac12 is currently 2nd with .750, just behind BigTen (.770) some historical references (ALL non conf W/L ratio) 2021 | 4th | .687 | 2019 | 1st | .790 | 2018 | 2nd | .784 |
Of course, this only tells part of story. It doesn't show the strength of the schedule. As long as the Pac12 keeps up and wins some big matches, I think it might not be a terrible season for the pac. And, just like that...DESTRUCTION in week 3. Can only hope we can salvage some solid week 4 win/loss records to get back in the hunt.
