Averi with her first of 14 freshman of the week Big 12 honors Simpson may actually sneak one of the weekly awards at some point. Had she not been so shaky in her debut, her performance against Wisconsin would have been worthy of recognition. Whoop, there it is.

Debriefing the games from this weekend and I am really having a hard time getting a feel for this team. Just gonna kind of mind dump some thoughts from the season so far.
- Baylor is strongest in the middle. Carlson has connected really well with both K. McGhee and Talbert. McGhee averaged 2.18 k/s, hitting .378 on the weekend. She has absolutely been pounding the ball. Her blocking was also phenomenal this weekend, averaging 1.82 blocks/set, bringing her season average to 1.55 b/s, good enough for #14 in the nation. Talbert is also a solid addition and runs the slide so well. She is also a great blocker, at 1.2 blocks/set. Which brings me to my next point-
- Baylor's strength is blocking. The team is averaging 2.82 blocks/set, leading the Big 12 and #14 as a team in the nation. This is despite Carlson being a blocking liability. Harrison and Simpson are great blocking outsides to go along with the middles. Baylor gets a lot of good touches on the block and for sure causes the most frustration with their defensive physicality at the net.
- The opposite position needs to be figured out. Both Szcech and E. McGhee have been extremely underwhelming. E. McGhee is averaging 1.21 k/s (.060) and .57 blocks/set. Szcech is at 1.33 k/s (.091) and .92 blocks/set. Szcech is my pick to continue to receive the start. She has so much potential- hits the ball HARD and is a good blocker, but needs to get her rhythm and timing down. A lot of her errors come when she is hitting on the left side in row 1, but Baylor really needs her to get more comfortable connecting with Carlson.
- Briseno has to be a top 5 passing libero in the country. Her serve receive is so solid. However, I haven't been blown away by her defense. Maybe she isn't putting up big dig numbers because of Baylor's block, but her defense seems to be just okay.
- Carlson lacks the all-around game that we saw from Sedwick over the last 5 years, but her skill as a pure setter is so fun to watch. At times, she seems to be more comfortable setting with her platform than with her hands but she delivers such a good set consistently. I do miss the attacking, blocking, defense, and serving of Sedwick, but Carlson is just so composed as a freshman.
- Harrison still has to learn how to manage her swings if she is going to be the leading attacker of this team.
- Simpson has been good. Started off with the rough match against Minnesota, but in the 4 matches following, has averaged 3.25 kills/set on .333 hitting percentage. I wonder what is holding her back from Baylor giving her a chance at playing 6 rotations. I am guessing maybe her serve receive. See next point.
- Serve receive has been the Achilles heel for this team. Briseno is solid of course, but with the two freshmen DS's (Keene and Dacosta) and Harrison joining her, passing has been so inconsistent. They go through stretches where the passing is spot on and then other times where they just absolutely crumble apart (Pepperdine match). With the youth taking on much of the passing responsibility, I hope the consistency builds through the season.

Giselle Vogel and Kaitlyn Riley no longer listed on 2022 roster So Kaitlyn Riley, while still not on the roster, has been with the team, traveling and what not. Maybe she’s injured and redshirting again. lt’ll be interesting to see how the roster shakes out for 2023. Harrison and McGhee both still have their extra year of eligibility but now sure if they’d use it at Baylor.

That's ridiculous, I don't care who the opponent is.

That's ridiculous, I don't care who the opponent is. And Baylor did it while resting Simpson and Talbert. Elise McGhee went a perfect 8-0-8 as the other outside and Alicia Andrew as the other middle hitting 6-2-8. The only other attacking error from Baylor came from Carlson but the rest of it was super clean volleyball. Carlson earned MVP of the tournament and rightfully so. She really had the Baylor offense clicking this week. Very well could be a lock for Big 12 POW and Szcech may join her as ROW after averaging 2.44 kills/set on .410 hitting percentage and 1.11 blocks/set including 3 solo blocks.

This team will be very good in the coming years and I’m excited to see them grow just over the next few months.

That's ridiculous, I don't care who the opponent is. Evansville didn't get a dig in the first set?!? WOAH!

One of many accomplishments in the next 4 years for this young crew. And these incoming recruiting classes are looking really good. Exciting times for Baylor volleyball.

It feels like Averi Carlson might be pretty good. True freshman you say? Averi Carlson obviously leads the way, and Simpson and Szcech have had some impressive offensive performances too, but I think Dacosta and Keene deserve so much recognition for being tasked with carrying a huge responsibility in serve receive as true freshmen. Only 1 serve receive error in 56 receptions between the two this weekend.
