Oh my - hearing someone say passing will be the teams kryptonite is so weird to me! Brown and Hornung will fight for the Libero spot but with none of the OHs having considerable if any experience in SR, expect them to be the target every time. Good to hear about Lourdes and Renner and her post-ACL form! I will miss Bush out there but Renner has had a long time to develop and learn so hoping for the best.
Clayton starts day one and will be opposite Colvin - oh I am excited to see her back. To me she was hands down the biggest surprise on any team last year.

Ball State is one of the best ball control teams in the country and they have all of their primary passers returning and will likely be a Top 25 team this fall. The Cardinals have been the premier ball control team in the MAC the past dozen years and that will continue into next season. It should also be noted the BSU played without starting left side Cait Snyder. From the Purdue side of things, outside attacker Maddie Koch only played 3 sets after injuring her ankle in practice the day before the match and still hammered home 10 kills without even close to a max jump. Myers was a pleasant surprise in the middle with 8 kills in only 11 attempts. Boilers had a match point but the feisty Cardinals fought it off with a match saving save out of the net. If Purdue can find a couple serve receivers to replace the stellar Otec and Hornung they will be fine next fall. BSU fans can expect another banner season .

I think Purdue will be "fine" without having passing the level of Otec/Hornung. But I suppose the definition of "fine" is what's at play here. A middle Big 10 record and a tournament appearance is "fine" - and I think they can definitely do that with their current roster. Now, whether or not they can be competitive with the upper big 10 teams and have non-conference RPI work in their favor for a seed is another question entirely. Looking at what they did the last couple of years and who did it for them, losing your #1 and #2 outlet scoring, pretty much all of your passing and backcourt defense, two big middles, and replacing a setter.....that would take some next level coaching (a level the coaching staff hasn't really shown anytime recently) or a Tarah Murrey level "click" for a player or two, to replicate what Purdue did the last couple years. All possible obviously, but not likely.

Wow. Little dig at the coaching staff. Other points valid but not sure why the extra.

Wow. Little dig at the coaching staff. Other points valid but not sure why the extra. I mean, Purdue is a great program, the coaching staff deserves tons of credit for that. I mean no dig at Purdue as a program. But when you look at their performance in the Big 10 and in the tournament, the most they’ve done is met expectations for a number of years now. That’s still really good, given what their expectations have been (they made the elite 8 two years in a row, that’s great). If you disagree, fine, but I’m not sure why pointing out that Purdue hasn’t really exceeded expectations in a while is seen as a dig - most programs don’t exceed expectations, I’d say the same about them too. To replicate the success Purdue has had the last few years with the team they have next year, they are going to need to exceed expectations.

I can name hundreds of coaching staffs who have not exceeded expectations. I would not include this staff in that group. This x10 If back to back Elite 8’s doesn’t qualify as “exceeding expectations” you might live in a make believe world.

Yeah, they did make the Final 8 and hand the national champs 2 of their 3 losses, the third of which was bizarre, while having 4 of their 7 losses to Final 4 teams and 2 of the others in 5 set losses, so they did pretty well.

It should always also be remembered that Shondell inherited a near the bottom of the league program and turned it into a perennial NCAA tournament team, and he has done so with different types of teams. First, with defense, (Miller, Mastandrea, Dildine, (thanks for her, as a Wisconsin fan), then adding offense, then with a more balanced team, but he has still won as the league got even tougher. His 2021 team may have very well won the league when he took the job there, and it was still darned good nationally.

Being ranked in the top 8 and making the elite 8 is not exceeding expectations it’s meeting them. Exceeding would a team like Nebraska, not ranked in the top 4 but making it to the semis and then the NC

All possible obviously, but not likely. This all seems pretty fair, except perhaps the highlighted part. I think the point was that with all the player losses it would take exceptional coaching to repeat the level of achievement in 2021. I guess it comes down to how you define "next level." My take is that it's unlikely for even the best coaching in the world to make up for the talent that isn't returning.

Just a friendly reminder that Dave Shondell was the Big 10 Coach of the Year this past fall in a league full of the best coaches in college volleyball including national champion coach Kelly Sheffield, Hugh McCutcheon, Russ Rose and John Cook to just name a few.

(Stanford. Nebraska. Texas..) Being in the Elite 8 is the same. It’s an incredible achievement.

Watched HS CO 2023 recruit Chloe Chicoine this weekend at MEQ in Indy... That girl is a WORK HORSE. She was putting balls down on Lainie Choboy (Minnesota Recruit and USA U18 Libero last summer) easily at times. She is only 5'10" on a good day, but she has bunnies and will be great at the next level. Hope she gets the chance to play in the front row for the Boilers. She played OH for USA U18 some last Summer when others were struggling and played incredibly well.
