Anyone else extremely disappointed? This seems like a knee-jerk reaction to Fisher (finally) turning it down IMO. Not at ALL a knock on Katie, just feel like Penn State could've landed a big name... but got turned down at least twice. oh they looked at a lot of big names. Almost none were interested. Yes, I heard there was little interest [compared to what you would expect for Penn State]. I hope the Penn State faithful will give her support. Don't prejudge just because she wasn't the big name you wanted. She might have had a recommendation from Rose even. Someone should interview Rose about the hire -- VolleyMag, you here?

Time of day is irrelevant when it comes to matters of the... err... heart.

I'm surprised. Don't know much about her; best of luck to her. Maybe this is the genesis of another "big name" coach; you never know. All the big names weren't always big names.

Wishing her a success, but hard not to see this as a transitional decision. No one will be able to fill Russ's shoes. It's the next hire that will be critical.

She might be a look at the future, when women dominate the head coaching jobs in Women’s Volleyball. Women’s Basketball in earlier years had mostly male head coaches. Now the opposite is true. No reason to believe the same thing won’t happen in Women’s Volleyball. Maybe she can convince some recruits to come to PSU to support a female head coach.

Wish her success too, but I'd say this is plenty critical. PSU is an elite college VB brand with a championship legacy. If this is just transitional and she doesn't succeed, the brand is diminished and the championship legacy is further in the rear view mirror. Why would it be more attractive to "big names" four or five years from now if Schumacher doesn't get PSU back to being in the hunt for titles? I guess maybe it's more attractive to not immediately follow Rose, but I still just don't think PSU will be better off with a transitional coach. There's no volleyball life force that guarantees PSU stays an elite brand; a relevant blue blood that will have the "big names" lining up. Maybe the point will be moot and she'll do great.

That's the one thing I'm honestly super excited about. In the last few years: Iowa, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers have flipped M->F, Indiana flipped F->M, and now Iowa has flipped back F->M. At least things are moving in a certain direction.

I think it's always good to have more women VB coaches, but this seems a bit underwhelming. But I don't know her and she could be a more experienced version of DBK.

it also looks like alumni are applauding the decision (Arielle Wilson) and calling it a great hire….so maybe there’s something there?

So first impression - who? You have two assistants, one with a few national championship rings as a coach and power 5 coaching experience (Dennis) and one with neither and that's who you pick? Ok, so she spent 14 years at UIC. After 6 years as an assistant, she spent 8 years as head coach and she had a winning record in the Horizon League exactly 1 time. The Big 10 is a wee bit tougher than the Horizon League. What's more? 4 years after she left, they are in the tournament. I am not at all educated on the state of the UIC volleyball program, but that would not seem to lend her a lot of credibility. I'd guess that Ohio State, Maryland and Pitt have to love this pick.
For the positive, Penn State is the #1 program for kids from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and New England and will be until it isn't. By pulling a coach with deep Chicago roots you'd hope that this expands their recruiting base. And with four years next to Russ you would assume she has learned a few things, and if she keeps Dennis next to her, they should be able to WWRD (what would Russ do?) their way to 20 wins long enough to figure out what she doesn't know yet. Mary Wise, Bill Belichick and many other coaches didn't make their first head coaching job work so lets wait to decide if she is ready or not.
And for all of the faults that have been discussed with Penn State, it is one of the 13 programs to have won a national championship, it is still a top end team in the #1 conference which just had 2 teams in the national championship match. With the possible exception of Lisa Love at USC, and Denise Corlett's 1 year at Stanford, you could argue that this is the best program ever handed to female coach. For the future of female coaches across the sport, let's all wish her luck!
