Confirming a lot of VT suspicions: “Did you have a chance to provide your input during the hiring process? ‘I spoke with Sandy [Barbour] and Lauren [Rhodes] and the search firm on maybe the initial call, and then after that, I wasn’t involved at all.’” Well, I think the suspicions of many were that his input was not impactful. I believe it was very impactful. Rose might have just said "do this". If they did that, he wasn't involved at all after he said "do this". Maybe the doing was a range of options, and they got from that range. So no need to involve further. Edit:. I see now I parroted Nyline. But it wasn't intentional.

I wouldn’t have anticipated he would have been part of the process.

I cant really believe how he was just like yea no I’ve seen plenty of matches in rec hall when asked if he was gonna show up to the first game He's sat in the same seat for 43 years. Now that seat is taken where would he even sit? Honestly though, and maybe I'm reading too much into this, but does it sound like he's a bit soured on Penn State/admin? -he's not going to the games -he's not really involved in the search -he points out that "I never lied in 43 years" which made me wonder if he felt like he were lied to -and last, when talking about 2007-2010 he said "we had a university that was committed to giving us every opportunity to be the best we could be." "Had" is distinctly past tense, and it is pointed out as if it were unique in some way, like that is NOT what he had recently. Again, maybe I'm reading too much into it. I don't know.

Yes, reading way too much into it. These thoughts are 180 degrees off from who the coach is. I think he would be pained to think anyone thought any of the above points were true. He served 43 years. We should let him rest in peace. Cheers.

What are your plans for retirement? “I think I’ll just take a little time off right now and watch from the sideline. Like I said, I’m not a fan of the transfer portal. NIL has some shaping to go through. I think I’ll take some time off, and if I get the itch to get back in, I’ll look for the coaches’ portal and find a job where I can be happy.”
So he could pull a Jim Calhoun and become a coach at a D3 somewhere? Or a PT assistant where he can golf in the morning, roll through practice in the afternoon and then smoke a cigar on his deck at night? I kinda like that he left that as a possible epilogue to his career. Volunteer assistant back at the school where he got his Master’s.

You were reading the interview like a John LeCarre novel.

I think Coach Russ may have just wanted to retire when he retired. Which includes just moving on and letting go and letting the people whose job it is hire his replacement.

There are two ways to retire. One is to walk away clean. The other is to hang around and try to "help" whoever takes over your job. Lots of times it's better for both sides to go with the first option.

I seem to recall hearing/reading that Russ wasn't happy with the administration and support that WVB was being given. If so the COVID seasons, NIL, portal and admin issues could all be contributing factors.
