Will CAL POLY's Lady'Stangs be a better team in 2023??? This must be the question the POLY coaching staff needs to be asking. With the departure, due to graduation, of their main scoring machine and two other outstanding players what can CAL POLY fans expect? Right now!!! To evaluate the team's returners,...both starters and bench players it doesn't look very good. Oh, Yes,...add in coach Walters' two NLI signees. And,...it still doesn't look good.

So what does a coach do? These are student-athletes, not professional players. I've read about how other schools will not renew a player's scholie because they already penciled in a new recruit for it. And yes I understand that a scholie is year to year with renewal, but other coaches will honor the four-year deal because they know they have to care for these student-athletes to make right the talks they had with the families. There are challenges they are facing besides volleyball.

Whether coach Walters has used two recruiting the recent signees no idea. So she has between 1-3 scholarships to work with.

Do we need new leadership?

Do we need new leadership? That is a very good question. Has coach Walters lost her competitive edge??? The 2022 recruiting class was not impressive. So far the 2023 recruiting class is the same. If,... CAL POLY fails to make the postseason in 2023, then I would think so!!!

Do we need new leadership? wow, talk about overreaction the season wasn't as good as desired. way too early to engage in that type of speculation. Walters has recruited and performed well so far, getting that extra setep is tough, it's not gonna get easier to recruit to Cal Poly. should be able to sell grad transfers on the academics, but then they have lots of choices. Has a good setter to build around, but next year right now could be tough.

I'm starting to think she either a) just doesn't care enough about putting in the time to recruit more depth or b) doesn't know how to teach the game. We have been consistent underachievers the past few years. This should be a perennial NCAA team or at the least an NIVC team.

We have been consistent underachievers the past few years. This should be a perennial NCAA team or at the least an NIVC team. I think this is really simplistic to addressing how Cal Poly achieves. Walters is NOrcal, Crosson was NOrcal Poly has been built on a lot of key Norcal recruits, that and Texas being key pipelines. Different coaches have different 'sweet spots' due to their connections. It might be a matter of Walters has to get other relationships to recruit. but saying 'she doesn't care enough' is just silly. Of course a coach cares and wants to win....duh. now how do they fill the recruiting pipeline varies from coach to coach. it's not Socal where maybe she doesn't have those connections to help recruiting. the Taylor Nelson, Van Winden had the advantage of family/history/legacy connections that frankly was a huge part of Poly's success. so what's next? Yes, Walters has to figure that out. but to chalk it up to 'she doesn't care' is somewhat a lazy statement in itself, unless you REALLY think she doesn't care if she loses her job evetually.

Sometimes I think Jake is a fan of another program and just plays a Cal Poly fan on this thread. Walters has done a pretty good job and has a lot of big shoes to fill these last several years. Hard to fill the spots with outstanding players in just a year or two. She brought in Stockholm and Bullis recently and just needs to fill a couple of key positions, like most schools that cannot reload in just one year like Nebraska and Texas.
Next year maybe a down year for her program but she still has time to fill some of their holes. In all honesty, she has performed at a much higher level than I expected when she was elevated to head coach from her assistant position.

Filling holes is the name of the game. Student-athletes come and go,...and, the head coach needs to always be one step ahead so no playing talent is lost,...maybe a step or two are gained. Coach Walters is no "babe in the woods". She knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the D1 level. The trouble spots seem to be the number of roster players untested. Which ones really have D1 potential and just need time to mature and which ones will never make the grade!!!
