this is what a NC contender looks like when they play an average team at home.

this is what a NC contender looks like when they play an average team at home. UCLA is definitely the best team in the nation at the start of March, but who will be the best at the start of the next month that begins with M and a? That is when it matters, and there is plenty of volleyball to be played over the next two months. USC, UCSB, and Long Beach could hit their stride and make it tough on the Bruins. My gut feeling is that UCLA is the team to beat come May, but the Trojans, Gauchos, and Beach will not make it easy on them.

The parity this year is so strong that anyone can win it tbh. People count out teams like Hawaii and even GCU after this recent series with UCLA.....but all you need is that extra push during the conference tournament and then make noise in the NCAA's and someone could upset anyone. I wouldn't count anyone out just yet. Hell, even Penn State or Loyola may have something to say come tournament time. You just don't know.

I did say contender.
I still like LB over UCLA but it is close.
Other contenders under those two are USC, UCSB, Pepp.
The next catagory I wouldn't call contenders, rather "long shots" really long. UH, UCSD, Penn State are here, maybe Ball State or Loyola simce they have an easier way in. It could happen for those teams, 2011 UCSB finished the season at .500 after losing badly to pepp and USC, then took the MPSF 8 team tourney apart as the 7 seed finishing off top ranked USC in the finals who was 32-3 at that point. Then they beat them again in the first round of NCAA only to eventually lose to a good Ohio State team. No team has ever come that close from so deep so it is possible but one in a hundred at least.

2022 is unlike the past several years where Hawaii or Beach were standouts. My top pics are USC, UCLA, Beach, Hawaii, Ball State, Ohio Stare.
When it’s up for grabs and there’s this level of parity I think you have to closely examine team weaknesses. Although weaknesses can be addressed during the course of the year and improved upon, (LB middle presence) they can also be huge opportunities to exploit as the season matures.
Whether it’s a certain position (middles, setting), a certain skill set (blocking, serving), an intangible (attitude, effort, communication) or even coaching.
