Just as clear defensively, they will be led by Gunter, who you could argue as the most underrated libero in the nation. Not a great passer or defender. 2.09 grade and a 50.4% GP on 500 passes. Solid bump setter though. passing could be better for sure, but she’s also exclusively passing with outsides back there (no DS’s in MSST’s system). Covering more court certainly plays a part in that. I think she’s an above average defender. She averaged over 4 digs per set in conference play including multiple 20+ dig games and a 33(!) dig game against Florida.

I’m keeping an eye on Lacey Jeffcoat and what role she will play this season… She grad transferred from Troy where she wore the jersey and I don’t have access to the stats, but she looked really good as the libero there. I wonder what the expectations are for who’s gonna wear the jersey this year. Between her and Gunter, that competition/depth should help improve the overall defense of the Dawgs.

I believe it is still very much Gunter's job to lose, but if Emily Oerther really is leaps and bounds better than Gabby Coutler, I could see them converting to a 5-1 and having Jeffcoat DS for Gabby Waden (if she isn't a threat out of back right). She passed a 2.22 last season, granted on less than 300 balls. She passed a 2.38(!!) the year before, so that would surely shore up any passing concerns. A 5-1 leaves McBride off the lineup, but at the end of the day, you want your absolute best players in as much as possible

Great get for Mississippi State. The Class of 23’ is top 20 in the nation and running stride for stride with any other SEC school you can throw out there. Julie Darty Dennis has the program positioned to have continued success for years to come. #HailState

Mississippi State has grabbed two people for the 2024 class so far: L McKenna Yates and S Cayley Hanson (she’s already like 6’2!). Both look like good pickups, especially Hanson, who could easily be tasked with the setting duties from day 1, barring a transfer which could be likely.
In other discussion, what’s y’all’s lineup predictions or at least what system? I’m now leaning towards a 5-1 with Oerther taking the reigns and Waden being DS’d by Jeffcoat. How fun would it be to see Gabby out of the backrow though!? I know this leaves McBride and Coulter off the court, but you gotta do what you gotta do. The other lineup question will be who starts in the middle out of Walk, Petties, and Robinson. I’m leaning Robinson and Walk at the moment, sorry Petties.

Wish MS could have been in a tournament with Hawaii. It was a great 5 setter match last season at the nationals.

S: Coulter S: Oerther OH: Myrick OH: Cromartie RS: Waden RS: McBride MB: Robinson MB: Walk L: Jeffcoat DS: Gunter
**3rd MB/RS: Petties
Here’s what I think the starting lineup for Mississippi State will be this season. I’m thinking MSU stays with a 6-2 based of a few key factors.
1.) They had so much success last season running the 6-2 and have continued to build the roster this offseason with players comfortable/willing to run the 6-2. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”
2.) They don’t have middles that run a great slide. Which is a significant factor when deciding whether to run a 5-1 or 6-2. Both starters Robinson and Walk are really good in front of the setter, but haven’t really shown themselves to be lethal off one leg. Some of that might have to do with opportunity, but still.
3.). I have a hard time believing McBride won’t have a big season this year Hitting and Blocking. She’s explosive, 6’3 and is a lefty. Running a 5-1 would keep her out of the lineup. Just don’t see it. Waden is Waden. The Waden + McBride combination will be the best one two punch at RS in the conference for sure, and probably in the country.
