Hosts: China, Japan, Poland Draw: March 17 Pools 1. China, Japan, Poland 2. Serbia, Italy, Brazil 3. USA, Turkey, Dominican Rep. 4. Belgium, Netherlands, Germany 5. Canada, Thailand, Bulgaria 6. Puerto Rico, Colombia, Czech Republic 7. Mexico, Argentina, Korea 8. Ukraine, Slovenia, Peru Here's my take on the pools:
1. China, Japan, Poland Most teams would prefer to be drawn with Japan rather than China or Poland.
2. Serbia, Italy, Brazil Most teams would prefer to avoid Serbia and be drawn with Italy or Brazil
3. USA, Turkey, Dominican Rep. Most teams would prefer to avoid USA. DR is too unstable but we don't know how Turkey will turn out.
Beyond the top 9 I have no opinion.
So we could see some rather lopsided groups, e.g. China/Serbia/USA or Poland/Serbia/USA.
FWIW if it was a direct serpentine then we have
Group A Group B Group C
China Japan Poland Brazil Italy Serbia Dominicana Turkey USA
so we have the group of death anyways.
I expect Serbia to punch their ticket in the first stage and anything else is a surprise. As for the rest of the top 8 I think everyone has their chances (so it's not a disaster if any of the other top 8 do not make it), some more than others, but ultimately it depends on the draw.
like it's a totally different story if China gets drawn with Serbia and USA vs Italy and DR. Same for USA being drawn with China and Serbia vs Japan and Brazil.

How unlikely would it be for one of the top teams to fail to qualify ? Like how many matches do you have to win

I think I would definitely prefer China to be drawn with Italy and DR.
Italy is a mess and China matches up well vs DR (well, better than Turkey and USA)

Maybe there are 3x 6-1 but if you lose 2 you're almost certainly out. I think the 'weakest' pool could end up with a 2-loss team qualifying. Especially if it involves Japan, Italy, one of Turkey/DR, Belgium(?), one of Canada/Thailand. I could easily see a wide variety of results in that pool.

Web Volei says Brazil wants the third hosting spot. So does South Korea. South Korea is a mess, both the team and their volleyball federation. With KYK retired from the national team, I am pretty indifferent as to whether I want to see them at the Olympics.

Given their circumstances, there is no chance they will have Russian athletes on their roster right? Reminded me of Nataliya Goncharova, she played for the Ukrainian national team before switching to play for Russia. I don't think that kind of scenario is gonna happen now, given the dire reality over the last year for Ukraine.
