This reminds me of when Clemson added softball. It seemed the administration supported it well and they were able to find success quickly. Sometimes, a new program can be exciting for recruits and transfers to be trailblazers somewhere. It will be exciting to see if Vanderbilt is able to find the right players to do build their program similarly.

I'll be interested to see what kind of admissions consideration they're going to receive at Vandy. Not going to be easy to fill an SEC roster if they can't go JuCo/foreign to start. Not easy to build a Kentucky/Florida/Texas roster. Obviously easier to build an Ole Miss / Arkansas roster with the advantages of Nashville and the portal. Hiring before the 2023 recruiting season gives them 2 years to prepare. It looks like they are doing this the right way.

This could be huge. Vandy is an incredibly attractive academic option in a top conference and it looks like they plan to build it in a way that supports the sport. It will be interesting to see who they decide to hire. No doubt, Vandy has potential. Of course, potential is one thing and fulfilling it is quite another.

Makes a lot of sense alongside the Vandy United campaign, and the recent rebrand.
Slightly offsets how blandy/ugly the new logos are.

Wonder if this will put any pressure on Oklahoma State to add volleyball? They will be the last P5 school without a team. For selfish (Texas) reasons, I enjoy seeing this. Once Vanderbilt starts playing, finally a conference volleyball schedule without an odd number of teams which should mean no byes during conference play. Has Oklahoma State ever considered adding women's volleyball? It will be rather embarrassing if they're the only P5 school not to sponsor it.

Whoever the HC is will go about it the way they want to. Educational guess - a little of everything.

No offense intended and setting aside Stanford, would I be wrong in thinking that most of the schools with really high academic standards have trouble fielding a women's volleyball team that's consistently in the top 25?

This is from a few years ago, but here are the average GPAs per sport in the NCAA. Women's volleyball was at 3.28, which is significantly higher than football (2.75) and men's basketball (2.77), the sports that are generally considered to be fairly tough for schools like Stanford (even though they've had some success in both sports) to field extremely competitive teams. Basketball has the lowest average GPA on the women's side (3.09), but schools like Stanford and Notre Dame have had plenty of success.

It looks like Oklahoma State actually did consider adding women's volleyball about two decades ago, but they opted for equestrian instead. The cited reasons at the time were "lack of gym space" (?--many volleyball teams play in the basketball arena) and volleyball not being very popular in Oklahoma. Does anyone from the area know if volleyball has become significantly more popular in the intervening time? I couldn't find much in a Google search.

I wouldn't underestimate how important this is for scheduling. Looking at the SEC, 15 teams is a real scheduling problem. 16 would allow traveling quads that would fit into an 18 match conference season. Play twice against teams in your quad and 1 against everyone else. Plus this can be done in 9 weeks with exactly 2 matches per week.
