At the Cheseapeake Region (CHRVA) Regionals this past weekend, there were some major shakeups. Metro is no longer dominating this region, as Paramount Volleyball Club--and to a lesser extent Blue Ridge Volleyball Club-- are showing that they are a just as strong (if not stronger) club. Both Paramount U14 and Paramount U15 won CHRVA Regionals, not Metro Travel. Paramount 14's went undefeated and didn't drop a single set; Metro 14 lost in the semifinals to Blue Ridge. Paramount 15's didn't lose a match and defeated Metro 15 Travel in the championship match for the National Bid. Paramount 16s narrowly lost to Metro 16 Travel in 3 sets in the championship match (Blue Ridge 16's also beat Metro 16 Travel earlier this season). Metro 17s did not participate because they already have an open bid (they took Paramount 16's best OH from last season, so Metro is still on top in that age group). Both Paramount 18s (double-qualified) and Metro 18 Travel (triple qualified) have already qualified in Open. Metro is obviously a great club still and one of the top in the country, but Paramount is on the rise and is quickly supplanting them in many of the age groups. Will be an interesting dynamic to follow over the next couple years.

So, the 18s NQ's are done with 6 At-Large bids up for grabs. Any prognostications?

Off the top of my head, here are some of the teams that I think will definitely be in consideration for the at-large spots (in no particular order): NPJ (did they earn a bid in Spokane?) Legacy 18-1 Adidas NKYVC Rockwood Thunder 18 Elite MiElite NO NAME MADFROG 18's N Green AJV

The Paramount 14 team that rolled over opponents in the Chesapeake Regional Bid have three girls over 6 feet and two girls over 5'10. I suspect they will get an open bid at some point. Two of those 6 footers are already approaching the 10 foot club. Their best hitter though may be a 5'8" left side. If this team stays together they will be scary good. You watch them play and you assume they are a pretty good 16 team.
They did finish 9th out of 64 teams in a power league of teams aged 14-16 in Raleigh. They beat a Beach Elite 15 team (red), a Carolina 16 team and another 15 team. Their only loss in the tournament was to Blue Ridge 15 that went three sets.

It will bring up the caliber of play in the entire region. I still remember when many of the top regions from FL & TX would come to NEQ thinking it would be easier to get a bid. Over the past few years, many of the local CHRVA teams have received bids at NEQ so it is great to see. It will definitely be interesting to see how the clubs jockey for local supremacy and player movements over the next couple years.

Late to this question but like all of the VT 18’s experts predicting the 5 At Large additions to the 18 Open field in Columbus 😃 What is the timing of announcements with all Qualifiers complete? 🤔 Are the top candidates based on Qualifier finishes without a bid or record against the field? 🤯 Coach K looking forward to my seventh straight (with no 2020) 18’s GJNC’s 😎 Still like the early finish to the 18’s season 👏

So now we can remove NPJ from that list. The only thing I forgot to mention that could potentially complicate the list of teams I named is some of those teams are 3Step clubs, so they will have to attend 3Steps national championship tournament, which I believe is the same weekend as USAV GJNC.

The only thing I forgot to mention that could potentially complicate the list of teams I named is some of those teams are 3Step clubs, so they will have to attend 3Steps national championship tournament, which I believe is the same weekend as USAV GJNC. [/div]
You can’t turn down open bids at a qualifier. 3 Step teams that qualified will go to Columbus or the whole club will get penalized by not being allowed to attend USA Qualifiers. Open at larges are different. You might be allowed to decline those.
I know that; I was referring to teams offered at-large positions; those are permitted to be turned down (with how expensive last minute travel plans can be, USAV knows they could never get away with mandating that teams accept an at-large invitation). With the relatively low turnout that is expected to be at 3step's end of season event, I highly doubt 3step would allow any of their clubs to accept at large positions and therefore miss their end of season tournament. The teams that already earned open bids will of course attend GJNC.

For the 18's At-Large bids (I believe by 4/4/2023);
The USAV Events Department will announce the Teams being awarded the GJNCs At-Large Bids no later than the second Tuesday after the last NQ. The Events Department will notify Teams awarded an At-Large Bid by email, sent to the Coach and Club Director at the email addresses provided in the GJNCs Event registration system.
