looked worse than the score, but i'm gonna stop harping on it. i'm sure the girls did their best. don't know much about Canadian volleyball, but it seems Sarah Pavin sheds a false light on it. I JUST finished watching the game. The philosophy of Sport Canada is wrong. (I think it's sport Canada, could be Volleyball Canada) They don't want to put undue pressure on kids at early ages (I agree) but they have swung the pendulum towards making kids non-competitive. If you want to do that fine, but don't put them in competitive situations. These girls did they best they could with what they've been given. They just haven't been much. imo Obviously we have some girls that can compete at a high level, and they somewhat catch up as they get older (in their 20's and older) but I feel they're doing their kids a disservice. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure in Manitoba, freshman high school teams play the game with opposing coaches throwing the ball to the receiving team to start rallies. Also I think they play with the lower net that we stop using after 12s at as old as 15. Again I could be recalling these points incorrectly. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. First off, it’s not just Manitoba that’s a mess. However, in regards to competitive ball, Manitoba has dropped off the map. The provincial organization “guidance” regarding high performance (insert sad eyes here) is laughable at best. I am certain that Manitoba isn’t the only province operating at this standard. Quite simply, COMPETITIVE volleyball in Canada needs a massive overhaul. These girls go to international events and it’s a smoke show at times. We always SAY we want to be competitive but don’t do the right things to become that (we have coaches that know what those things are but they rarely get an opportunity to lead a program. The girls are the ones who suffer. You are correct - there’s nothing wrong with being participatory just don’t say you’re elite until you can somewhat prove that on the court. The USA match proved how far behind we are. Hang in there ladies, one day someone will care enough about you and right this ship. Keep working hard. |

By the way …. FYI, some of the u21 Canadian women’s sessions had coaches bringing balls in underhand to start rallies/drills so freshman ball is not a stretch

Sorry everyone, didn't mean to clog up the thread gripping about the state of volleyball in Canada. The US game against Peru is probably going to be tough to watch. |
