Cougs finish the first weekend 2-1. I thought they looked good against BYU, but BYU played phenomenal. BYU didn't have an error through the first set and a half.

However, really disappointing for WSU that Rubright went down with a knee injury in their first match. It is being evaluated to determine severity. Could be season ending. That would be very unfortunate. Also, leaves the Cougs with very few options if they are struggling or have another injury. Only 3 middles total, and only one other OH available, as their freshman OH is also injured. Fingers crossed the rest of the players stay healthy, and Rubright's injury is not season ending. She does have another year of eligibility after this I heard them say, though.

jivb, are you a Coug? Maybe I'm out of touch. But... "Washington State Cougs" sounds strange. "The Cougs" or "Go Cougs" is common. But when you spell out the more formal name, it is usually "Washington State Cougars" or "Washington State University Cougars".
The same is true elsewhere. "University of Washington Dawgs" just sounds strange to my ears.
I don't know enough about the rest of the PAC to make a prediction on the Cougs finish in the standings.
After reading other posts, I was expecting BYU to struggle a bit with passing. But they passed great. The result was their high Hitting %. The Cougs offense seems to be a bit slower than last year. Hence, BYU seemed to get more block touches than I was expecting.

If her injury is season ending, then she could almost certainly get a medical redshirt, which would retain her two years.

Actually I did go to WSU for part of my schooling, and saying Washington State Cougs is not weird to me. But where I went to school doesn't mean one can't be a fan of a school, and know their lingo. I spelled it out, because there are other universities with WSU as their initials, so to be clear, it was spelled out. Also, others in the past who made a Cougs thread in the past used the same title. Saying just, The Cougs, would be too vague. Lots of schools are Cougs.

But I never commented on it and I haven't seen any other Cougs on this forum.
I agree with spelling out "Washington State". But I would always add "Cougars" as opposed to "Cougs". I was born and raised in Seattle and can't recall ever hearing the the formal University name combined with the informal mascot name. There are lots of Husky fans on this forum. Maybe some of those will comment on this. Or... maybe I'm old and out of touch.

If it really would make you happy, I will change it to Cougars, but I don't think most people care as much as you about this.

I was recently surprised to look at the Cougar Roster and see that Sheri Sanders joined the staff last spring as a Volunteer Assistant Coach. I was even more surprised to see that she was an All American Setter and 1989 National Champion at Long Beach State. And that she has been coaching VB and training setters for many years. I thought that Volunteer Assistants were young Graduate Students that wanted Coaching experience for their future Resume.
A search of the internet found a fairly recent article that mentions that she splits her time between California and Idaho, where she purchased a new home. I have to assume that her Idaho home is not too far from Pullman.
Sounds like a great addition to the staff.
Sheri was with the team this past weekend in Provo.

In the game vs. WA, the commentators said that Martin also had a season ending ACL injury. Can't believe that WSU lost two middles in preseason to the same injury. Very odd and very unfortunate. While at the same time, Jansen left the match midway through. WSU had such a good chance to do well this year, but it seems to be falling apart.

Anyone know of the upcoming recruits for 2023/24 for the Cougs? They need some better passers, more depth in the middle, and will need to be replacing some OH's in the next year or two.

hopefully WSU will be even better next year with all these returners and one of Rubright/Martin is fully healthy...they might wanna look for more depth in the middle via portal, I can't seem to find anything on who they signed for 2023? would also need someone to step up in Jansen's place

Hopefully losing to UCLA bumps them out of a #7 or #8 seed. I really think this team has the capability to make it to the sweet 16.
