Wow, Purdue was up 24-18, and it's 24s now. Louisville fought off 7 set points and they win 27-25 to get the sweep!

I didn't see the match because of work but by watching the live stats, just looks like a total collapse of serve receive and Purdue being unable to side out with Hudson in the back row.
A lot of work to be done but I'm glad it wasn't a total massacre like last year.

Purdue was up 24-18 and lost ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ that was the worst collapse I’ve seen in recent memory. Their passing just collapsed and Ellis was awful down the stretch

Not a good look for the Purdue coaches. Ewww. Edit: going after the refs like that? Learn how to lose. It's okay. Someone has to lose.

on Set point, a net call was called on Purdue. LOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGG review with the Shondells pacing the court, then the ref comes back and said there wasn't a net call, but a touch on the Purdue block. The assistant coach Shondell (dont' know his first name) lunged after the ref and Kathy pulled him back. It was HEATED! they were up 24-18 and Louisville came back to beat them.

Whoa whoa whoa… before we all get carried away here. It was not some street brawl. Heated, deservedly so. I’d like to see the video where someone touched that.

I don’t know enough about volleyball. When a coach calls for a review…doesn’t the ref just look at to see if the player in question was in the net since the coach says that she wasn’t in the net? Then if the other coach knows that the other team touched the ball to make it out, then that coach can challenge a touch call as well? Or does a ref just look at everything at once? I am asking honestly and want to know. I thought that that was the regular process in the past seasons. You only look at what is being questioned. If Louisville was out of challenges, then they couldn’t challenge a touch…right? I know that that is not true in the match, but I am asking hypothetically. I am hoping that I am making sense lol.

Okay, so after rewatching it, I agree I exaggerated it. Lunging isn't the best word. I see why Purdue is upset. I didn't see a touch or a net violation. But assistant coach Shondell crossed the line of acceptable protest, imo.

You can now analyze all parts of the action in question. So the touch was in play though I’ll be honest, they showed it 4 times and I couldn’t see it. John Shondell gets pretty heated in big moments, I don’t think either coach crossed any lines. It’s a miserable way to lose a match, being up 23-18 and 24-20 and losing on a challenge you win but still lose. Louisville needed that and played like it. I expected Purdue to get destroyed and this was a battle.

So to you, it looked conclusive that there was no net touch, but not conclusive that Purdue touched the ball and they changed the call that way? That seems really frustrating.

On replay, you really can’t find a net touch or a block touch; I just don’t think it’s there. Just checked the schedule, this Purdue team actually fared better than last season’s team. Same match result, but much closer sets at Louisville. DeBeer is great, Jones is sloppy but was big down the stretch for Louisville. I LOVE Lazaro - she’s exactly who they needed to fill those shoes.

Okay, so I did not get a chance to watch this match live, but I did "DVR" it to watch tomorrow -which I will. Anyhow, after regrettably seeing the final score already, and reading about the challenge and how the match ended, I had to at least watch that portion -I always do stuff like this, even when reading books -ugh.
Anyhow...as someone who has only officiated and umpired youth basketball and little league baseball, this still seemed completely out of bounds. And I mean what I am saying... The ball was COMPLETELY out of bounds, no net, and no touch, and the down official was 100% out of bounds to dictate how this match ended.
I am embarrassed as an official, and as a fan. This did not go the right way. Sure - Purdue was down 2 sets to none. Sure, the momentum was in Louisville's favor. But regardless of all of that - because it is 100% irrelevant, this "call" was ridiculous. Absolutely unnecessary.
I would comment on the reaction of the coaches, but I've never coached anything at a high level, so I don't know how I'd react from either bench. My gut tells me that if I were DBK, I wouldn't feel great about the way I won, but I'd be glad it was over. My gut also tells me that although I don't have much guts, I'd still feel the way the Shondells felt in that moment. Just not sure how I'd act. And I really don't think they overstepped at all. No physical threats were seemingly made, and they were just standing up for their players, as I saw it.
I will watch the whole thing tomorrow with my wife -she tends to see everything I don't. But in the meantime, I feel this game should have not ended when it did, and I hope no teams experience that type of meddling for the rest of the season.
I am a nice guy, and I don't mean to upset that official (and I understand being in the moment) - but in all honesty, this didn't have to happen this way.
Yes, I do like Purdue Volleyball these days (as well as my historically ACC and Big East teams) , but I'm more of a general volleyball fan, as I see it. I just thought I'd weigh in.
