I really don’t think UW was that sloppy, I just think Northwestern passed lights out in set 1. Northwestern has the arms, for sure. Disagree. Where we do agree is that UW defense was atrocious in that set. Better now along with much better serving. Well you are ok to disagree, but Sans a couple aces on Northwestern, they were passing 2.3 or better as a team in set 1.

Washington closed it out 25-22. Both teams hit .400 or better in the fourth set. Still, good to get out of there with a win for the Huskies.

Not a lot of defense overall for either team in four sets. The FBSO must hae been high. Hitting % .400 for UW!! I didn't get to watch, just watched the stats.
Nice win Huskies!

When your sixth most efficient hitter is at 0.292 (Endsley) you should do well.

Back from the match. Always nice to see volleyball in person from a great vantage point -- you get such a better sense of what's going on. I agree with folks who say that when Northwestern is in system, they can be very good. The first and fourth sets demonstrated that. I hope they have a great season and beat a few good teams in the B1G.
A few observations as a Husky fan:
- Cook has to get his team ready to play from the opening serve. Bays getting aced the first serve of the game was not auspicious. Team defense really did suck in set 1. Legs appeared to be stuck in cement. UW is still quite vulnerable to dinks and dumps; other teams know this and yet the Huskies don't anticipate it. After one of the matches this season (I don't remember which one), Cook said that he thought the Huskies had a chance to be an elite defensive team this year. Ahem. Let's start with "good."
- Fortunately for the Huskies, Hoffman was good the entire match, eventually hitting over .400. Ditto for the middle attack, hitting over .500. After very slow starts, Endsley and Bush got it going and carried their weight in the latter sets.
- The service game needs to apply pressure more consistently. Nine aces looks good on the stat sheet (Northwestern is not the best passing team) but the service game is not where it was last year. Bays in particular seems to have regressed.
- Not sure why Bush didn't make the trip to Boulder last weekend, but looked healthy, if a little rusty, tonight.
- When the Huskies really need a point, there are two great options: Hoffman and Grote. By all means, set Grote as often as you can, Ella May.
I'm going to try and catch the Pepperdine game tomorrow at 11 am before we head out of town. I was surprised Cal Poly took them to a tense fifth set tonight but didn't really get to see them play, so not sure what to expect.

We've got to stop spotting teams the first set. Sort of like a cat playing with its "food", but it can come back to bite you (which it already did). We are hitting .321, which means that, once we get going, we're hitting pretty well. I thought we dialed up our serving after the first set. Also that Ella May upped the tempo of her sets, especially shooting them out to Endsley.
