I think Houston may be more competitive than most think. I don’t think they’ll be as competitive as Stanford. Was that competitive? I just think UH is going to have a difficult time scoring points from the service line. If you’re getting sided out 70% or better, it’s tough to make the set truly competitive. If you make it to 20, but Texas is already at 24, that’s a “type” of competitive, but the set was never much in doubt. We’ll see, though. The transitive property says UH lost to Rice in their first match and I watched Texas obliterate Rice 5 sets in a row on their home floor in a preseason sctlrimnsge. And this is at Gregory. If any team is going to surprise Texas in the regular season it’s going to be on the road. UH is a quality team. I think they’l be a tournament team. High Point probably will be too, for that matter. But this Texas team is too good and too complete for either of these opponents to truly take advantage of any lapses. If there aren’t lapses on UT’s part then they won’t even score 16.

Someone tagged asjia said please take out the two racist on the team I see "@asjiaoneal please run this racist program and those two racist players out of Austin quick, fast and in a hurry. Racism doesn’t belong in Gregory gym so please let them feel your presence 🤘🏽" I'm not familiar with the background story here. What makes the two players plus the entire program racist? UH is not a racist program. There is WAAAAAAY more diversity on the UH campus than there is at UT. Their president is Indian. They were at the forefront of integrating college athletics even while Houston was the largest segregated city in the country. It’s my opinion the efforts of Bill Yeoman and Guy Lewis in the 60s help to avert the race riots happening in other parts of the country. That’s not the only thing, or even the main thing. But it was helpful. The specific incidence was a video posted on social media where one of the UH players from a small town in Texas is talking about the towns celebrated tree where they used to hang black people. It was not good.

I remember the days of the Southwest Conference when Haley was at UT and Walton at UH. Back then UT VB was virtually all white while UH was a more mixed team with stars like Latisha Charles, Karen Bell and Lilly Denoon-Chester. LDC was nearly unstoppable her senior year and UH swept UT in the season and made it to the Elite 8. Going further back into history, the late great Flo Hyman was also a UH alum. I certainly hope that the UH leadership dealt appropriately with this incident because it's completely inexcusable.

It was not good. it wasn’t good Those players did participate in a sit in against violence towards black people. So they’re not like, members of the kkk. Boneheaded kids, especially the freshmen. VERY freshman move One of the players was a senior, which I have no explanation for Edit: to make myself clear, the behavior was 100% racist and inexcusable. But I wouldn’t use it to label the players racist forever, much less the entire UH program

It’s very difficult for us to appreciate the mindset of someone who grows up in a sundown town, especially in East Texas. Part of the point of a university is to help educate the population. These are 18 year olds. Sometimes the social media lynchings come from a similar anger/hate inspired mindset and tribal leanings as the racism they’re trying to combat. Racism out of ignorance is a very real thing. It doesn’t excuse a person’s behavior, but sometimes there are more productive approaches than what the mob calls for.

The fight against racism is not yet over. Nor is the process of figuring out which ways of fighting it are most productive. I will say: UT-Austin is no one to be pointing fingers about racism, given its history which has continued up through the present day. I come from a mixed family but I remember as a kid visiting Austin and talking to my older cousins who were UT students at the time. One of them made comments about East Austin that at the time were the most racist things I had ever heard. He and I do not have a relationship anymore.

There will never be a point where some kind of fight against racism is “over.” That’s an extremely dangerous mindset to have in the first place, IMO. Outside of using crispr technology to excise aspects of our genetic code - which would have all kinds of unintended consequences - we’re stuck with racism as a condition of being part of the human race. That’s not to say we just throw up our hands and let it run wild, but it will always be an ongoing struggle. I’ve always said the best way to get rid of racism is to interbreed for millenia until racial distinctions barely exist, but we’d always find plenty of things to separate ourselves into different tribes that served a similar function.
