Why are you allowed only 8secs to serve from when the whistle is blown.
It should be 20secs minimum dang it!

Do we know what % of college coaches start the team in the same line up every game vs what % tries to get the preferred match up?

So could 4 theoretically be the the right of five? But just ahead? Looking at this, I can’t fathom how anyone is “out” of position, is it most commonly like 5 is on the wrong side of 6 etc? Yes. This would be legit - - - - - - 32 4 5 6 1
As long as 4 is in front of 5 (the player behind her in this rotation), it’s okay.. The left-right positioning of those two players is irrelevant. There are still plenty of ways to mess up and be out of rotation. .. if 2 is the MB, she will want to switch with 3. If they cheat it too much, or switch too early (before the ball is hit) they can be called. .. if 1 is the setter, and wants to get up to the front quickly (and not interfere with 6’s reception of the serve), she could accidentally get to the left of 6 before the ball is served. .. if 4 wants to play deep, and 5 wants to cover the short serve, they’re asking for trouble. Amazingly I somehow figured all of this out simply by watching a prep game where the players had to clasp one anothers hand before the serve and then as soon as it was served they traded places. It was an epiphany "oh they have to start at the position in accordance to their position within the rotation, but then they can switch to their preferred position on the court." and I began to notice it at all levels, minus the hand clasp. Typically the middle lines up like a statue and the other front row players have to stand behind her ready to pounce into place as soon as the ball is served. Like in this picture they are all huddled up like that because the one on our left is going to wind up on our right, and the one on our right is going to wind up on our left as soon as the ball is hit.

What is considered “out of rotation”, as it seems like players just stand where ever anyway. Like I get the gust of it, but is there like an invisible square they need to be In pre serve or something? 1)side players must be closer to the sideline than the middle player in their row. 2) front row players must be closer to the center line than the corresponding back row player. So, for example, middle front must be in front of middle back and left front must be to the left of middle front

I scanned the pages but didn't see this question but hopes it's not a repeat: I often see a libero on the court when her team is in serve receive. Her team wins the point. The libero then goes back to serve. I assume she is technically subbing out then back in all in one process without leaving the court. What exactly is happening in this instance?

Yes, this was discussed and explained a couple pages back

What exactly is happening in this instance? not "subbing" let's go with the term used earlier, "replacing". Think of it as a double replacement. In your example in serve receive she is currently replacing the 'back row' middle (A). the 'front row' middle is (B). point is won, team rotates. Middle A rotates to front and comes back in, libero goes out. Middle B rotates to back row and libero replaces them, and serves.

Why is a let serve in VB in play In tennis it’s a do over That factor of randomness interrupts normal play If a serve hits the top of the net and doesn’t reach the attack line (unplayable) then replay the serve Makes perfect sense that it’s no longer a fault should they ban float serves because they involve a "factor of randomness"? Also, if you're comparing serving rules between tennis and volleyball, should volleyball allow a "2nd serve" if there is a fault on the first serve? You’re too smart to be obtuse What part of analogy is hard to understand? What part of analogy ‘tennis fault’ did I not extend A float over the net potentially puts the ball in play A let that drops into the court doesn’t I’d be fine calling the net touching dribblers service errors if a replay is deemed ‘wrong’ If you listen to the crowd or watch the body language of the players you know this is a correctable irregularity that would make the game better Speaking of which

How many matches do you have to attend before the players begin to recognize you as a regular? It depends on the team. I could go to every Wisconsin home game and probably never be noticed in a sea of 7000+, but it wouldn’t take much if your team averages 100 or less. If the team is locked in though, they’re not paying any attention to who is in the stands.

Tennis has or had the Hawkeye for in/out challenges Even GoPro has high frame rate capability
Isn’t it dumb with all the tech available now at lower price points that we don’t have video replay that is faster?
Talk about disturbing the flow…schnykees!

Why do blockers cover their ears and stick their elbows out when their teammates are serving? To avoid getting a concussion if your jumpserver misses and hits your head

Thanks to the OP for this thread.
Since 2005 I've been reading dozens of dumb questions on Volleytalk every single day. Some of them are my own.
It's good that now all the dumb questions will be in one thread.

Talk about disturbing the flow…schnykees! Sadly it’s about the $. Nebraska wanted to buy the system used in Omaha for the VNL but since the other 13 B1G teams wouldn’t have the same, they would have had to reduce the frame rate and render it useless. So whatever the lowest team has… everyone is stuck with.

Why are passing numbers not a reported stat but digs are? I can tell from a score sheet who attacked the ball, who set the ball, who dug the ball, but I can’t tell who received the ball. Arguably the most important role in the gym and I can’t tell who does it. Receive attempts are a recorded stat, but doesn’t tell entire story without context. I wish passing grade (generally scored out of 3) was a public stat. As a member of the media who covers volleyball, nothing makes me sadder than not having access to this stat.
