As August camps are underway, and scrimmages and exhibitions are happening, what options are available to non-starters who see the writing on the wall and want to be starters elsewhere? Is there time to enter the transfer portal, enroll somewhere else in time for the Fall semester of classes, and be eligible to play immediately (if first-time or grad transfers)? The "deadlines" to enter the portal have thrown me off as to what options, if any, are available before the season/semester starts.
Immediate eligibility aside, if a player wants to transfer out now (and not burn as season of eligibility in mop-up duty) and is okay sitting out the upcoming season at a different school, is that an option? Seems like they'd still have to enter the transfer portal (if it's open right now).

If you don’t enter the portal during the designated windows, the “penalty” is that you have to spend a year in residence at the new school. So yes, a player could enter the portal today. Enroll for classes at the new school on Monday and would be eligible for Fall 2024.

I'm not sure I understand your question. I think yes, they just wouldn't be eligible for competition.

If the school year hasn't started yet, the player should be able to enroll at another school and play immediately, right?

If the school year hasn't started yet, the player should be able to enroll at another school and play immediately, right? Nope. Typically, the athlete has to enter the portal during the allowable windows. If they meet another exception (head coach departure, grad student, etc.), the deadline is August 1.

Curious and not advocating this, but has there been court challenges to the current transfer portal rules.

Curious and not advocating this, but has there been court challenges to the current transfer portal rules. Not that I am aware of. And I don't see that being an issue. Whether we are talking middle school kids or professional adults, I think a sports organization saying you are locked onto one team once the season starts is a perfectly reasonable rule.

Sports organization vs individual rights. Not so sure about that since the sports org has a monopoly.

You think an athlete would win a lawsuit to force the NCAA to allow athletes to switch teams mid-season? The athlete would be allowed to attend the new school, practice, and be on scholarship. Just not compete.

45 days. That’s what it was last year I thought. Was it 45 days in the winter and then 15 days in the spring? In any case the article says it moved from 45 to 30 days in the winter for football, but didn’t really get into it for other sports.

In any case the article says it moved from 45 to 30 days in the winter for football, but didn’t really get into it for other sports. This is correct. It was 45 starting with selection Sunday then 15 days in May. I assume volleyball will follow football’s lead and make it 30 days starting selection Sunday and 15 in May. I still don’t understand this rule. If somebody decides they want to transfer in February, what is the benefit of making them wait until May to enter the portal?
