If this^ is meant to be a question to the group, I've renewed my season tickets. Looking forward to watching the 2023 Illini in person. Would be cool for them to schedule at least one preseason match or tournament but even if it were only our ten conference home matches, I wouldn't miss it.

As we wait for bigger news like the non-conference schedule drop, hopefully a transfer pin addition, and 2025 recruit signings, here are a couple minor items from looking at the updated 2023 Illini roster page: Gabby Dean will wear #15, Vanessa Pan will be #17, and Maya Imoto-Eakin will be #19. Also, Maya is listed as a setter, which contradicts that recent article that suggested she's going to be a defensive specialist. I know these roster entries don't always reflect the plans of the coaching staff but with Barnes, Barry, and Pan higher up on the DS/L depth chart, I'd think Maya's likely our backup setter. Can't wait for the season! We're less than three months away from opening weekend!

Any word on a 3rd assistant for the Illini? Have they even posted for the position?

My observation was an absolute guess based upon my dark and probably warped sense of human nature. Obviously I don’t know anything about what motivates Gursching. How often she is set may not be important to her or other D1 level players - I never played college volleyball. I just saw last year Gursching had 1412 attacks in 110 sets. Next on her team was 671. Raina had 1163 in 109 sets. Next on our team was Brooke with 644 in 109 sets, although some of her sets were playing back row. Taylor Landfair had 1231 swings, next on their team was 730. Most teams have one hitter who is set considerably more than anyone else. On Illinois that is going to be Raina. I set men’s club, so the comparison may not be apt, but distribution was something I was always concerned with, and the best players were always calling for the ball in tough situations, a personality trait which contributes to being the best. Regardless, Gursching would come here not knowing if she would be starting, much less getting the lion’s share of the sets. Hopefully our players don’t count sets and accept situations in which someone else is on the court. She was clearly the biggest part of Youngstown’s offense and would not be if she came here, which is why I said I don’t know if she would want to join our program. She sounds like she would be an ideal addition. I just realized from the transfer thread that Paula Gursching announced her transfer to Hawaii last weekend. I hadn't noticed it until just now as the VT post didn't have Paula's name in it, just a link to the Instagram announcement post. Seems like embedded Instagram posts aren't displaying on my computer, so this one slipped detection. The two OH I had been wondering about are committed elsewhere now- I'm not sure what remaining pins are out there.

I wasn't sure whether May or Imoto-Eakin is expected to be next in line and admittedly just mentally slotted Maya above Bianca because she's taller. Bianca was getting reps as DS this spring, for whatever that information is worth.

Has she done something as a coach that you think MB will make the Illini better?

Has she done something as a coach that you think MB will make the Illini better? Come on, man. Think we're all aware that she's only been retired from playing professionally within the past year or so and hasn't coached at the college level minus some tOSU spring matches. If you want to say something just say it, instead of this fake question approach.

She served as a volunteer assistant coach for UCI’s men’s team. IIRC, they won a national championship while she was there. She should be recruiting gold for Illinois.
