Hawaii is at a crossroad point. This may be a unpopular opinion but if we want to compete for a national championship again, we can no longer keep the players that aren't cutting it. The P5 schools with the portal are making changes every year. Look at Texas and Nebraska. They have no problem cutting/replacing starters with players who they think are better. I think Long Beach state will also be doing this moving forward. The coaches have only 12 scholarships to give out. At the end of each year, the coaches will let the player know if they will have a scholarship the following year. This would mean we could no longer guarantee 4 year scholarships to every freshman we sign and in some cases might be a year to year decision with all players. We know where are weaknesses are, but with only one scholarship to give - we will not be able to plug all the holes. On the other hand, I understand the Ohana and loyalty we value. If we want to stay this course -winning the Big West every year will be considered a successful season.

Not really surprised, since the coaching staff has always stressed back row defense, this past season. I really like Tayli Ikenaga, feel she will become an outstanding Libero. But if the coaching staff can get an outstanding Libero type of player for next season, then they should, even though it is not one of the weaknesses. I trust this coaching staff, in whatever decisions they make. Our defense is our weakness, at least on the national level. Just in the *Big West*, we're in the middle in Opponent Hitting %, Getting Aced, Near the bottom in Digs, etc. I don't have our passing stats, but they were very average when they were posted earlier in the year. I'd say that an upgrade at Libero is more important than an upgrade at MB, and probably about equal importance to RS production. (I'd say that Tayli has exceeded expectations as a walk-on. This is on the coaching staff for giving 0 scholarships to the back court--these days you need to give scholarships to your DS's if you want them to be any good) Priorities, in regards to scholarships. Now with 1 scholarship available, it could quite possibly go to a Liberio, in the Transfer Portal. Looking at next season's roster, every position will have competition, except for the Libero position. The coaching staff needs to bring in someone to push Tayli Ikenaga. Talia Edmonds is not the answer. Believe the coaching staff is looking at moving Caylen Alexander to Opposite next season, to upgrade that Position. The reason why the coaching staff used their 2 scholarships on Outside Hitters, in Stella Adeyemi and Tali Hakas. The Covid Epidemic threw the coaching staff off in rebuilding the Wahine Team, to National Prominence again, just a little. It seems like the coaching staff is back on track, by who they brought in last year, this past season, who they signed for next season, and who they have committed in 2024. The coaching staff will need to hit the Transfer Portal after next season, to bring in players to push the returning and new players. For instance, a Transfer Middle and quite possibly a Transfer Setter, plus an incoming Freshman Setter. Not to mention an Outside Hitter, or two. It is good that the coaching staff will have a lot of scholarships to give out after next season. We should be hearing more about committed players, for 2024, this off season. Not to mention, incoming transfer players, after next season. The next 2 off seasons will be very busy ones for the coaching staff, to get back on track.

Robyn, will never be satisfied with just winning the BWC Title, she is looking at winning a National Championship. She knows what it will take to do that, the players she will need. Covid, set her back, but she and her coaching staff seem to be back on track.

Y’all should scoop of Kamaile Hiapo. She’s been criminally underrated because she plays at AZ.

There are plenty of players I really enjoy the passion they bring to the squad but I know an upgrade is needed.

Whoever the setter is next year really needs to perfect their slide sets whether it be the tight slide (which was non existent this year) or to the antenna. That was definitely the most inconsistent set all year and when it was bad, it was just blocked or tipped over. There was rarely any misdirection or tandem plays. Hopefully Robyn allows her setters some freedom in running more plays.

Unless Matias is just bad or Lang transfers/graduates I don’t see them bringing in a Setter in 2024, considering the 2 year gap the program likes to keep between starting setters. I do hope the next setter the program goes after is more in the Iosia/Adonia/SKT mold as a freshman. Not sure what the 2025 class looks like as far as gifted setters with height I think had Byrd been setting full time from the start of her career she’d be ahead of Lang rather than just brought in for more of a blocking presence.

The reason I say 2024 is, it seems like Robyn will want to redshirt the incoming setter their 1st year. Just like she has done with Jackie Matias. The 2024 season will be Lang's last, and Matias's 2nd year. It will also give the the incoming setter a year without any pressure to learn Robyn's system. I believe that is what we will see when it comes to the Setters for the Wahine.

I do not care how good they are coming out of High School, I have never come across a Setter being perfect at all types of sets, as soon as they step on a D1 floor. They all have a weakness in one, two, or more, types of sets. But by the time they are either a Junior, or Senior, they can make all the sets to perfeection, at least the really good ones can.

Lang should be a junior right now but with covid and missing a season, that made the 3 setter scenario we saw this season. It’s just not an ideal situation to have 3 because no matter what, someone isn’t playing the entire scrimmage. Pretty sure the last time UH/Dave had 3 setters, one ended up transferring out. Forget who the three were, Was Uiato, Monica Stauber, and one more?
