Pretty low hitting efficiency numbers. The setters not connecting with the hitters or the hitters just not doing their job? It could get ugly against NU if they aren't more efficient.

On the good side, though, no one is scoring against the Gophers, as per usual. It will be interesting to see how they do against Nebraska. It would help them if their lineup was more settled. I think Peniata is a heck of a player, but I doubt that she will be at OH for too long, unless she has a late growth spurt. Even at DS, she has to be one of the best walk on players in the country. I think that she, Gentil, and Bowman are pretty much set, and that gives any lineup a great start.

Yeah, they even had Peniata playing middle and Meredith Nelson outside for a rotation, could you image that lineup against a team like Nebraska? It'd be bad enough with Pavan hitting over the top of Peniata on the outside since the Goph's still usually only put up one block on that side. My expectations are low as well for Monday's match. Don't really care for the lineup used against ND St and Xavier tonight. The hitting was better last night and the defense was better tonight.....2 many hitting errors. I'm sure there is some method to the madness in the coaching staff's eyes but I'm not seeing it....just have to trust I guess.
Really want to see Florian play and hope she will debut against Nebraska as we could use the additional heat on the outside and the extra defense.

I am all for trying to get bench players into matches if you can, as it gives them valuable experience and a reward for their work in practice, but I would want to start what I think my best lineup will be and then make adjustments on that. It seems like they were playing all kinds of different combinations this weekend, but since the coaching staff has gotten the team to the Final Four the last two years, I have to assume that they know what they are doing.

Isn't Angie Pressey (sp?) of Cal still playing all the way around at OH for the Bears and doing pretty well? The last time I check she's listed at 5'8" to Marci's 5'9".

Actually, that situation happens with middles and outsides fairly often but only for one attack before the two switch to their "normal" positions while the team is on serve recieve for that rotation because of the "overlap" rules for players while waiting for the server to contact the ball for the serve.

Marci was _blocking_ middle, not really playing middle. This was when the Gophers were serving and Xavier only had 2 attackers, one of whom was always running a slide. Pretty smart move, if you ask me--but I'm sure it was specific to the opponent.
The thing is, the Gophers focus needs to be on the Big10 season (and the post-season). They have no reason to rush Cumpston and Florian. Sure, it'd be nice to have a good showing against Nebraska, but that would be really short-sighted planning on the part of the coaching staff.
I have no doubt they know what the are doing in terms of putting together a Big10 contender...

I wish they would change the conference name. There are more than 10 teams in the Big Ten. Did they ever explain this at all to people? Did they just want to keep the brand name intact?
The Big Eleven is just too close in number to the Big Twelve, I guess. And really, they are really just a midwest athletic conference, but changing the name even to Big Eleven or even using the word "Midwest" would seriously devalue everything they built up over the past few decades.

Pressey is a dynamic player and did really well in one match I saw last year, but she got shut down another time I saw her. This can happen to everybody, but smaller players really need to be at the top of their game to be effective offensively and on the block, especially when they are giving away a lot of size to the people blocking/hitting against them (see: PSU this year, for example). Also, they might just get hit over on the block. That isn't to say that they can't be effective, Lisa Zukowski had a nice career for the Badgers, but things come a lot easier to 6'2" outsides who can jump. Still, you can never have too many players who are good passers and diggers, so there will always be a role for those players, no matter whether they play all around or not.

Basically that is the only real issue that I have with that particular lineup, the rest of it is farely solid. I am assuming the coaching staff wanted to give Cumpston some extra time to heal but hopefully she will be able to start on the OH against Nebraska tomorrow and have Peniata as a DS come in for Roehrig.
I guess since we've played everyone during the first match except for Florian it wouldn't surprise me if she red-shirted to retain her 3 years remaining of eligibility, especially since she is a walk on this year. Otherwise, kind of a waste of talent....but just my opinion.
