Cook believes that (1) Beach improves the players' all-around skills. Even though indoor players are specialized by position, occasionally a middle will need to dig a ball, a pin may need to bump set out of system, etc., for example. It also helps hitters become better with shot selection and being "crafty" in general. Tough matches are won by being better during out-of-system, messy, and drawn out points, and well-rounded players tend to be better in those moments. (2) More importantly, it's a way for the players to continue working on their skills on a low-impact surface which tends to save wear n' tear and prohibit overuse injuries. (3) The schedule and locations serve as a nice reward for the players. They go to places like Hawaii, California, Arizona, et al., and get to enjoy the nice weather outdoors in a low-pressure environment. Excellent post and insights. Thank you. GBR! Agree! huskerjen, really appreciate your contributions here!

I've always been curious as to why Nebraska chooses to do beach volleyball instead of indoor spring volleyball? Wouldn't doing indoor in the spring (like a lot of other teams) with more than one spring game, be more beneficial to the team than beach? Interested to hear what others have to say about this. They do a little of indoor spring. They beach season is only a few weeks for them and ends early, then they take a late indoor spring. It would be interesting if they were actually good in beach one of these years and had a shot at the post-season, what would they would choose to do. Ive always been curious about this. Is Nebraska even allowed to participate in that post season?

As an aside, that perspective is not unique to John Cook.

Not knowledgable about SD roster after this past season - is Anni capable of starting? competing for that spot? Is this a practice player + masters situation? Thanks!

San Diego has a returning senior setter, don't know how good she is, but the fact that Evans is being recruited there as a senior setter shows that Petrie wants competition at that position. (She brought in Blossom over her last season too so....)

Having watched both setters play lots, Anni is capable of starting. Isadora Terçariol (6'0), the other setter, has a better serve and is a better blocker and attacker than Anni but I think Anni has an advantage in other elements of the game (defence, setting location & choices). Anni also has the advantage of getting significant playing time over the past year while Terçariol sat on the bench behind Blossom. However, Terçariol has the advantage of working on connections with the team for longer. Although we know from the Blossom experience that San Diego doesn't mind running a 5-1 with a shorter setter, I wonder if Petrie is thinking of a 6-2 given Anni's size and experience running the 6-2 this past season.

Or a 5-2 or a variation of that if Isadora is the better server.
