Looking ahead to the 2023 UNC Volleyball season:
UNC 2022 Season Final Stats: Overall 17-12, ACC 9-9 7th Place (Picked 6th) Final RPI: 65
Season Hitting Percentage: .208 Kills/Set: 12.82 Blocks/Set 2.31 Service Aces: 1.84 (1st in ACC)
UNC ends a disappointing season with the #7 overall recruiting class. In what was a season that the team hoped to advance deeper into the NCAA tournament, UNC didn’t even qualify to make the tournament. UNC also dismissed an AC for unethical behavior and will need to fill that position and several roster sports. While UNC brings in another top 15 class, UNC will need to learn to develop their players much better to become more competitive in the ACC and nationally.
Roster Losses:
Skyy Howard (MH) Charley Niego (OH): 2nd Team all ACC Carly Peck (RS) Karenna Wurll (L) Parker Austin (LS, RS, DS) Niki K (MH) Olivia Diaz (DS)
Transfers:
Ella Bostic (S, transfer out)
Returning Players:
Seniors: Kaya Merkler (MH)
Juniors: Mabrey Shaffmaster (OH, 1st Team ACC) Marissa Meyerhoefer (DS)
Sophomores: Sadie Swift (MB/RS) Anita Babic (S, all ACC Freshmen team) Ava Swain (OH) Liv Mogridge (MH, ACC All Freshmen) Carson Overbecck (DS)* Maddy May (L)
Freshmen: Cadence Shea (OH/RS)* Romani Thurman (OPP, S) AVCA 3rd Team HS All American Safi Hampton (OH), 1st Team AVCA HS All American Sydney Nolan (OH, MH) #70 recruit AVCA 2nd Team HS All American Zoe Behrendt (S, OPP) Lauren Schutter (MB)*
Transfers In: Emani Foster, UNCC, OH 2 Years Remaining (2020-2021) CUSA Freshman of the Year, AVCA National player of the week, AVCA All South Region (2x), Conference USA 1st Teamer and Conference USA 2nd Teamer. as A LS, she has a career .271 hitting percentage and a 2.40 d/set mark.
Lauren Schutter: RS Middle from Michigan State
Expected Transfer Targets: OH, S, and DS
Keys for UNC:
Need Improved Passing, Need RS termination, and continue growing service game.
This staff has no excuse this season. The freshmen will need to take a leap this spring and be one of the incoming freshman will need to be prepared to assume the RS. UNC needs a desperate change to be competitive again in the ACC and nationally.

I get confused with Babic and Bostic (their names are very similar in my head) are they both sophomores? I thought one was a senior

Funny that UNC needs to hit the transfer market for Setters, DS and OH when they have players with Elegibility left that they have trained that are transferring out…….

Babic won the starting setter spot. Coaches now need depth there with only her on the roster.
A 2022 All ACC Pin has reached out the staff to see if there is a spot for her. She is applying to grad school at UNC and waiting to see if she gets in. If so, she would be the 3rd pin transfer in the past 3 seasons.

Don’t we have a setter coming in? Zoe Behrendt?

Congrats to Louisville and Pitt on making it to the final four - and guaranteeing an ACC team in the final for the first time ever.
Great for them but hard not to think if Scoles and crew stayed (and Scoles not getting concussions all the time) and those dominos don’t fall that it could have been us.

Congrats to all teams in the final 4. ACC proves that it is top two conference with Pitt and Lou in final 4. We took a set from each and should be proud how we played in those sets. Proven we can play. I hope that next season we decrease our oscillations and beat Pitt and Louisville.
Hard to believe BIG10 won’t have representation in the final 4. But that’s tournament.

Rooting for one of those 2 to win it all. It would do wonders for the ACC (see FSU softball and how it helped the entire conference recruit and up their game.)
Congrats to our winter grads as well. You all will be missed.
UNC will really be working on getting this freshmen class to take the reigns this spring.
I forgot that Zoe Behrendt was coming in as a setter. She will definitely up the level of setting in the gym. Kid is solid.

I echo the thoughts of Tarheellife and Volleyheels10. My DD played at UNC from 2005-2008, and while they won 2 ACC titles, were competitive and played in two NCAA Tournaments, the ACC was a rung below the elites. No more!!!!! It has been great to watch the success of the UNC teams of the mid-2010 's decade, which I believe raised the level of the ACC, last year's run by Louisville to the Final Four and this year's fantastic performance of Pitt and Louisville. I love the fact that the ACC is now a top-tier conference in volleyball. I now will probably cause some angst, but I am a Joe Sagula fan. He has won numerous ACC titles and is a great guy. How quickly we forget. I have read this board and am somewhat distressed by the anti-Joe sentiment. He has done much for the program. Oh well, I will end by admitting I am not now close to the program and its situation, so go ahead and let me have it.....Just my two cents worth...

I used to be a Joe fan and I still think that he is a good guy....but sometimes good guy doesnt cut it....he was such a good guy that he let 2 assistants in the past rule the roost and also treat players badly (this has all been since 2013ish). I think that the pressure of trying to get UNC back up to the top in a growing conference has also led to him being more of a harda** if you will.... its also not good to our recruiting classes when we constantly redshirt girls, bring in a transfer and they never get playing time or developed. I can guarantee if he would have stuck with one freshmen group and developed them properly we would have seen a rising trend over that 4 year period, but instead we prioritize transfers and dont develop what we have. I guess I feel that with the new wave of girls and transfer portal Joe is sort of out dated in the game. He supports the players off the court more than he has on the court lately..... I'm not going to let you have it because unlike a lot of people up here, you are entitled to your opinion and thoughts. New concept, shocker LOL.

Those that know Heather from UNC playing years know she is a very passionate and gutsy player turned coach. She has potential to really impact programs. Good for her.

Congrats to Louisville and Pitt for representing and UL for going to the Natty.
Hurt my heart to hear Katie George say "the perennial powerhouses of the ACC used to be North Carolina and Florida State." I truly think if our 2016 core would have stayed together we could have had a magical run the past few years....
Here is to hoping the team that really pushed Pitt and UL this year will return as the baseline for 2023 and get UNC back in the conversation.
