Gabby Blossom got "beyond abused" all the way to a 31-2 record and a final four appearance.
Size and blocking are a small fraction of a setter's value. Give me location, tempo, decision making, OOS opportunities, leadership, serving, and defense all before blocking as a necessary skill to predict setter value.

Gabby Blossom got "beyond abused" all the way to a 31-2 record and a final four appearance. Back to my original point, size and blocking are a small fraction of a setter's value. Give me location, tempo, decision making, OOS opportunities, leadership, serving, and defense all before blocking as a necessary skill to predict setter value. my point about blossom isn't incorrect tho. obviously that was a stacked team that was very good in all facets of the game. but to say she didn't get consistently targeted (with success) would be silly. probably the best pure setter in the country last year, but also far and away the worst blocker out of the top teams. do you think she wasn't abused all year?

Maybe not "consistently," but Grome definitely got targeted with success last year often as well.

That wasn't your original point, but ok lol

Yeah but that game was an all-systems failure, a 6ft setter wouldn't have helped. The whole team buckled.
Fwiw, I can't see a 6-2 either and I don't envision Grome getting beat out. Goetz is good offensively, I think if she loses her starting spot it'll be because of her blocking, and if that's the case, I think Williams would most likely win it.
For me the big question this season is which 2 outsides step up. Guessing Lamb and Wilson start the year, do they solidify their spots or do Melby/DeLeye play their way in by November?

Lamb has had a really nice spring and seems like she’s focused in the weight room this off-season to give her another gear. She has a powerful swing so really hoping she takes control of that position with Wilson, Melby, and Deleye all competing for time as well. Wilson has a great serve so I’m sure that will factor in too.

I think Skinner should start Wilson/DeLeye from Day 1. to be honest every Kentucky fan should hope it’s DeLeye starting day 1. Like you said earlier she’s our biggest key. We have STUDS everywhere else. If DeLeye is as good as advertised we are a final four caliber team with a TON of depth all around the dial.

Arguments made using those numbers can lie however.

More than anything, the SEC Coaches named her the Player of the Year. Those are the people that play against her, attempt to game plan against her, study her, etc. and they chose her the Player of the Year.
The numbers do tell a story. Numbers can be angled to tell a certain story but assists per set, blocks per set, digs per set, offensive efficiency and all other metrics tell the story of an All-American player.
