Why isn’t volleyball played at Moody? Well, there are several reasons. The primary one is that Elliott doesn't want to. He likes the atmosphere at Gregory Gym. Texas actually struggles to sell it out. He'd rather have a full Gregory Gym than a half empty Moody. With TV wanting 11am tip off times on Saturday and Sunday for big matches, that's going to disincentivize moving over to Moody for big matches even more. There are a couple of logistical reasons, although although I don't think there as big of an issue as what I just typed. Texas doesn't own the building, but contractually it has the right to use Moody a certain number of days per year. In order to get an arena at no cost to UT for the athletic department, they have to allow the owners to profit from the building and location most of the calendar year. Both men's and women's basketball teams play there, and it holds a number of events, including graduation. I think there are still enough dates remaining for volleyball, and even if there weren't, I'm sure something could be worked out. But it is a potential issue. The other thing is that season ticket priorities don't automatically shift over. Longhorn Foundation donations for sports other than men and women's basketball count towards seating priorities, but Moody has its own donation priority. So, for example, someone who buys expensive donation seats at DKR-Memorial gains access to priority seating in Gregory, but not Moody. I can't imagine that would actually block hosting a volleyball match at Moody, but it's another logistics issue to work through. My guess is that we'll see a match played in Moody for the A&M game next year. I don't know that that's the case, but that's my guess. Thanks. I think you’re AI. |
