Baylor is coming off of yet another Sweet Sixteen appearance and second place Big 12 finish in 2022. Coach Ryan McGuyre had a young squad this season and looks to have an even younger lineup in 2023- there are ZERO seniors projected to be on the roster. Here's my analysis my position:
Setters- Averi Carlson returns after a stellar freshman campaign in which she was named the Big 12 and Southwest Region Freshman of the Year. She displayed a lot of strengths over the season, including her tempo, ability to set on the move, and floor defense. She will be joined by another top setting recruit in Harley Kreck. It'll be interesting to see how McGuyre manages these two as both are very good. Kreck has more size and physicality at the net which was one of Carlson's weaknesses. Do we see a 6-2 with the amount of hitters on the roster? Time will tell.
Pins- Though nothing has officially been reported regarding Harrison leaving, she was honored at senior day so I am not expecting her to be back. Baylor does return 2nd Team Big 12 honoree in Sczech on the right side who had flashes of greatness and showed to be a great blocker throughout the season. They also get back Simpson and E. McGhee who battled it our for the other OH spot before McGhee won it out. Dacosta and Keene come back as well, but were used all season as DS's for McGhee and Sczech.
The returners are joined by incoming freshmen in Stowers, Murphy, and Screen. Stowers and Murphy are highly touted recruits and I expect at least one, if not both, of them to be a starter on the left pin. Both are capable of playing 6-rotations and could be really complimentary to each other- Stowers with her ball control and craftiness and Murphy with her power and physicality. Screen will also add some solid depth though I could see her redshirting while the coaching staff works on her mechanics some.
Middles- If Baylor were to go after a transfer, I think it would be an experienced middle. They are bringing in Bibinbe who was a NJCAA All-American and has international experience, but none of the middles have any real D1 playing time under their belts. Andrew was used very little as a blocking sub but that's it. Kaitlyn Riley, who was a top 100 recruit, may be back on the roster next season but that's tbd. McGuyre said that Tori Davis may be the most explosive jumper to ever compete at Baylor, which is wild because Yossi is right there, but she seems like she will be a great project. The middle seems to be Baylor's biggest question mark at the moment.
Backrow- Briseno is queen and will forever be queen. The best passer in the nation who made great strides in both her serving and defense. Excited to have her back. Dacosta and Keene were also solid in their roles this year. Dacosta is a great defender who passed pretty well. I don't see her breaking the lineup as a 6-ro player, but she made great plays in the backrow all season. If she can improve her serving + backrow attacking, she will continue on her path to being a great DS.

Wow, this is a very young team. No seniors! It’s crazy that the young lineup from this season is only getting younger.

A lot more depth on the pins this year. Excited to this Baylor team, lots of potential.

Still have no clue what’s in store for Lauren Harrison’s future. As far as I know, she’s not in the portal but also haven’t seen anything about her coming back. Maybe done with college and going pro? Really unsure.

Also looking at the roster, that will soon include Kreck, Davis and Murphy, the depth at the left pin is definitely looking good for Baylor. A Murphy/Stowers duo is so exciting to think about but then you also have McGhee and Simpson who are capable, Keene and Dacosta, who were solid DS’s in their first season, and Screen who had a solid HS career.
Sczech should be a lock at the OPP position (and would love to see her play 6-rotations).
But the middles… not sure we have the room for a transfer so I guess we are going with what we got. Not saying they are bad, just unproven. But maybe Davis’s raw athleticism shines bright from the start. Surely hoping so.

Not shocked she was recruited as a libero, even though she isn't making headlines like other ds’s she's definitely one of the best. & yes so excited to see stowers and murphy compete.
