I'd say pay is more important than Cliff Keen in attracting a coach. Of course, any coach would know that he has to sell the program and Cliff Keen will be a part of that and some recruits will be turned off. But, I'd think a lot of coaches would take the Michigan job anyway if the pay is good. There's just so many positives. I wonder if the athletic department will again make a pitch that Keen will be renovated or a new facility is forthcoming.
For those of you who know Keen, can it be successfully renovated? I'll break that down into three parts: (1) - can the playing/seating area be renovated in a way that is attractive - even if capacity is still below other Big 10 schools; and (2) can the concessions/common areas be renovated to provide more space; and (3) can the locker rooms be successfully renovated? I know there's not a lot of room but can they add on a new area with brand new locker rooms off the back or side or something? Same for concessions - a new entrance atrium (like an airport) - that's more spacious and flowing and can accommodate better concession/bathrooms.

It's a really tight fit, squeezed between the IM building and Weidenbach Hall. There is a small area for potential expansion around the south entrance that could serve as a better lobby/concession area. The problem with the arena though is that it was not built for its current use, it was built as the home of the swim team (cool photo of that here) and any renovation to the seating in the arena would likely decrease capacity. With Crisler routinely drawing 2-3X the crowd that we get at a sold out Keen, it doesn't seem to make sense. A multi-purpose arena in the 3-5K capacity range that can serve gymnastics, wrestling and volleyball is needed. They had a preliminary design and a site picked out a few years ago, just never dedicated the capital to complete it. The fan base and demand is there. I agree pay is by far the biggest driver in who comes here to coach, but for long term program prospects the facility needs to be addressed.

Not an expert, but I'd say err on the side of larger. So, go 5-7k. Of course, as someone who doesn't know how much about it and doesn't have to pay for it, that's easy to put out there.

While some SAs are lured by pretty facilities, my daughter recognized at 15yo that the school's academic reputation, coaching and team environment was more important than that stuff. She went on some visits where she felt like that's all they were trying to sell (we fly private, we have great shoes). IMO, with all of the recent discussion about player mental health and unhealthy coach/player relationships, recruits will value the coaches reputations and coaching philosophies more than how sucky the gym is.

Maybe they follow OSU and ASU's leads and get a club coach/director? There are some great ones in Michigan Not sure why more schools haven’t done this after the success of JFO. It has to help local recruiting instantly.

It has to help local recruiting instantly. The best club in Michigan is Legacy, and Michigan’s team was chalked full of Legacy alumni this year (Mruzik, Robinson, Murray, Grant, Dowd and Nyambio)

Usually we’re discussing some alumni, does Michigan have any alumni coaching in college? Googled their All Americans (per Wikipedia). - It looks like Erin Moore was coaching but has been out of the game since 2017.
- Katie Bruzdzinski (Gawlik) is on staff as a Volunteer with her husband at Central Michigan.
Could Mike Gawlik be an option? I know he’s from MSU but his wife played at UMich. How did he do at CMU?

I mentioned him a while back, he’s built CMU back up (had a few 20 win seasons including this year) and was an assistant @ MSU back when they had a nice run of 9 NCAA tournaments and 3 Sweet 16’s

I said this in the Rosen thread (and a lot of other info about Michigan's athletic department) but if the AD follows what he did with Women's Soccer, he'll hire an AC from a highly regarded P5. She did have a couple of years as the UNLV HC, but that was 7 years prior to her being hired at Michigan. The only coach the AD would have worked with at Connecticut would have been Kris Grunwald and I wouldn't think that would be the move. Thoughts on Jason Kennedy from B.C.? The school has paid for them to play in the NIVC the last two years so there's at least some admin investment, although maybe not a lot--no actual idea, just speculation. His ACC finishes have been 11th, 7th, 13th, 12th, 8th, so up to you whether you think that's good enough, by BC standards, to warrant a B1G Head Coach gig. BC has certainly been happy to have him: bceagles.com/news/2022/12/16/eagles-unlimited-a-program-redefined.aspx

Meske is going to make an amazing coach. I would love to see him coach in the BIG! There’s a very good chance he has zero interest in being a head coach. Why would you think that? That's an odd thing to say? He's the one with all the "ideas" as far as new plays and ways to improve play? For any working person in that type of position to just say this is as highest I want to go. Being an assistant volleyball coach period.

Being an assistant volleyball coach period. Because he took a smaller job as a head coach because he wanted a better work life balance for him and his family. He quickly left a head coaching job to be an assistant. With his resume he could have at any time been a head coach at a good program. The ability to be a head coach and wanting to be are two totally different things. I also didn’t say he wouldn’t with any level of certainty, just that it’s very possible he may not. In many ways being a high paid, respected assistant with a lot of responsibilities is waaaaaay better than being a head coach. Erik Sullivan is probably the best example. He isn’t a head coach at a great program for the sole reason he doesn’t want to be.
