Academy 17E Tsunami win Central Zones over Boiler Jrs 171E Gold in 3 sets. Elevation and NKYVC looked really strong as well. NKYVC team must have some injuries because they did not have a full roster. NKYVC was missing Julia Hunt. She had a HS Bball tournament that weekend.

Hmmm, with those clubs I’m going with Triangle, TAV and OT Aaron. Possible upsets by Miami Hype or MKE Sting. Will you be there dogmomx3 ? I’ll be at a different tourney but this would be a good one to see.

After day one the only undefeated teams at the Northeast Qualifier in the 17 Open are Rockwood Thunder, Metro, Houston Skyline and Long Beach Rockstar.
Metro is firing on all cylinders, finally playing with a complete roster for the first time. Mailinh Godschall is a very under rated libero. Emerson Sellman has greatly improved her game, if that is possible. She is hitting missiles from the back row that I would be dodging rather than digging. And Lameen Mambu has one of the fastest arm whips I've seen hitting a volleyball.
The Rockstars have Charlie Fuerbringer setting in the back row with her left handed swing doing damage in the front. Halie McGinest hits a hard ball from the left side and they have some length in Bryn Shankle hitting middle.
Houston Skyline have two setters over 6'0" running a 6/2 in Kira Musgrove and Cayley Hansen. They have some leapers and length on that team.
Impressed with the play of Kayla Lopez from AJV Adidas 18. She is one of the smallest players on the court but every aspect of her game is good. Her opposite on the left side is about four to five inches taller (Lauren Murphy) and she is a keeper. They play good defense, serve well and keep their offense fast. AJV, AVC CLE RED and Metro are the only undefeated teams in the 18 Open. Metro and AVC Cle have already qualified for Open.
The Flower Show is taking up most of the convention space. With only the 18's and 17 Open there are only about 20 courts being used.

In the Northeast Qualifiers the only undefeated team in the 18 Open is Metro. In their last match they made an incredible comeback. Down 2-8 and 7-13 in a third set match to AJV Adidas they came back to win 17-15. Milan Rex, the Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year made one of the gutsiest plays I've seen. With the pass at the net and Brielle Kemavor in the air to hit, everyone was expecting a quick set. But she did a two handed dump to an empty four spot for a 16-15 lead. Brielle finished off the game with a block.
The Gold Medal Round has Metro vs AVC Cle Red and CUVC playing Gainesville Jrs. Gainesville and Metro already have a bid, so they should just forfeit and have AVC Cle REd and CUVC Titan duke it out. If two bids are being issued then it's a moot point.
In the 17 Open Rockwood and Metro are the only undefeated teams. Rockwood, Houston Skyline and Rev Raptors play in one bracket. Metro, AJV 17 and AVC Cle Red play in the other bracket. The winners of the two brackets will get a bid and play it out in the finals.

That was considered a big upset when Rev knocked off Rockwood 27-25, 17-25, 15-11. Rockwood was making a comeback in game three with Claire Morrissey leading the charge from the outside. But just as quickly when Rockwood got to within 11-13 she hit a ball out and then got blocked and Rev came out on top 15-11. I only saw the last few moments of game three.
Rev then went on to beat Houston Skyline 25-19, 25-22. Loved their setter Kamryn Utley.
Did not stay to watch the championship match that Metro won 25-16, 25-20. Metro had beaten them earlier in pool play 25-21, 25-22. It would have been a two hour wait minimum and all the Open games were done that meant anything.
Metro 17 came close to not advancing. In their first set against AJV they got down 5-12 with poor passing giving away a number of points. The two teams traded off points until it was 11-17. Middle Maddie Bowser had some clutch blocks and Lameen Mambu some bombs to the floor, including an out of system set that was crushed to put Metro to within one 19-20. Mambu got a couple more kills and Ryla Jones an overset kill and big time block and it was all over 25-22.
The Jones twin tower block is deadly for left side hitters. When the left side has two 6'5" players to hit around potential kills get rejected in a hurry. Return to sender. In one set the two sisters combined for four shared blocks, and they were of the straight down to the floor variety.
This Metro 17 is a different team from last year. Last year they had Emerson Sellman, who had tenure with the team and the new kid Macaria Spears who got a lot of the press, deservedly so. This year it is pretty clear that this is Emerson Sellman's team to lead and they are responding.
When Metro 17 was warming up some girl got hit on top of the head twice as she was standing with her back to the net putting balls in the ball cart. When her teammates implored for her to leave she left. When Metro is warming up they put the ball down and girls should sit next to the basket and not stand. That is probably true for most open teams. It doesn't seem to matter how close to the net they are Metro pounds the ball far in front of the 3 meter line when the coach is tossing sets.
The 18 Open championships Gainesville Jrs won 26-28, 26-24 and 15-13. I could only watch the third game, but it was one that Metro fell behind early, made it 14-13, but Brooklyn Tealer finished it off with a kill.
Gainesville is listed as an 18/17 team. I'm not really too sure what that means. They have four 2024s on the team, with 11 total on their roster. By being listed as 18/17 does that give those four players the option to play with the 17s in the Nationals should Gainesville 17s make it as well? Why even show 18/17 if there is no advantage to it?
