Freshman hitter Jamie Houston leads the team in kills (3.61, .230), followed by senior middle Victoria Prince (3.56, .429). This is just weird from pure math’s stand point…. Basically the above statement says: Player A needs a 4.34 attempts to produce a kill while player B needs only 2.33…Considering the fact (from UH website) A has made 165 attack attempts i.e. she has won 40 pts for the team while B has made 126 attempts resulting in 54 points I would translate it as B leads to A with 35% I keep saying it’s either media people are not very deep into the game or they don’t care much about what they write.

But, it's a true statement... she leads the team in kills. If the statement were she is the most efficient and productive attacker, than it doesn't work. To stop this, we should come up with a new "category" so that we can say things like this: "While Freshman Outside Hitter leads Hawaii in kills per game (xxk @ .xx), Senior Middle Hitter Victoria Prince is the most effiecient attacker with xx @ .xx"

Five-gamers are the best, but only if your team wins. I was thinking that last year's team wouldn't have gotten such a following if it hadn't pulled out so many five game matches. If they had pulled out half of those in four, I think we would be pining how easy the schedule was, and how it wasn't adequete preparation for the postseason. As is, they are the little engine that could who couldn't quite make it over the hill.

If Hawaii had last year's schedule this year I think there would be a very good chance of going undefeated in the regular season again. Last year I remember they played: Arizona San Diego California Pepperdine UCLA I don't think any of those teams are the caliber of Nebraska, Penn State, maybe even USC. The schedule this year is just a lot tougher than last year. As for tourney predictions if Hawaii plays like the played in the USC match and first two games of the Penn State match I think Hawaii goes 3-0 this week. UCLA is a very good team, but I don't think they are the same caliber of Nebraska or Penn State.

They are a very young team but you never know. They could be a sleeper team.

But, it's a true statement... she leads the team in kills. I can’t disagree because numbers are numbers (I never argue with them) however when one wants to point out something he/she must not provide info that diminishes the achievement. In this particular case the small advantage in kpg that Huston has over Prince (~2%) is brought down by her hitting % which it’s about 47% lower compared to Prince. It comes down to how one construe his/her statement….if the % was not posted right next to the kpg numbers I would have missed the comparison but now it’s too obvious.

In support to what I'm saying about media people here is a quote: "The Utes had a 2-0 lead over the Aggies and had to overcome a sluggish game two and three to escape with the 3-2 win. " .... looks like they played sluggish in game 3 but won it and even though they played beter in game 4 they lost it....not that's theoretically impossible, of course utahutes.collegesports.com/sports/w-volley/recaps/090605aac.html

The Bruins should win handedly. They normally play real good their 1st two games until the game with Hawaii, must be the nerves and the Hawaiian home crowd. Can't wait to see how far Nana has improved, I'm wondering if she is jumping any higher from what we seen last year here in Hawaii. She had the hops.

Nana is jumping incredibly high and her shots are straight down. Her first few matches were great. She is an awesome player.

Well from a lone Cal State Northridge Matador fan this is wishful thinking -
1. CSUN, 3-0 2. Hawai'i, 2-1 3. UCLA, 1-2 4. Cincinnati, 0-3
or
1. CSUN is 2-1 and everybody is 1-2
but that's just b.s. wishful thinking and it'll probably be like this...
1. Hawai'i, 3-0 or 2-1 2. UCLA, 3-0 or 2-1, if I was a UCLA player, I'd be sick and tired of being beaten by Hawai'i year after year in Hawai'i 3. CSUN, 1-2 or maybe just maybe 2-1 4. Cincinnati, 0-3 or 1-2
As always many people have a strong tendency to overlook CSUN and I think it's because when they play or the fans that watch their team play against us they automatically come to the conclusion and think, "oh, it's just CSUN(Northridge), an easy win" - they sorta lump us in the same basket as CS Fullerton, UC Riverside and even Cal Poly, but the past three years CSUN has been doing a good job in trying to shake off that image of being an easy team to beat.
This year's team is young and I mean young and a few Matador fans may think it's a step back to have seven freshmans playing as starters - which I agree to a certain point, however after playing a grueling non-conference schedule I think it may benefit us this year and the next three years.
By now this team should know what to expect and this Waikiki Beach Marriott Volleyball Challenge should be the toughest of the tournaments they have competed in, so they best better be ready and think of this as a foreshadow to Big West compeitition. I just hope that they'll come out aggressive with a fiery attitude(like Elaine Youngs, Lleyton Hewitt) they won't mentally walk off the court(example, pro tennis player Lindsay Davenport), however this team is not physical and they certainly have developed a knack not to give up and just hang in there until their opponent starts making mistakes and that is when CSUN start using that to their advantage(this team reminds me of a bunch of Chris Evert's put together).
Well CSUN - just win, cut down on the errors, beat the Bruins(please - end the losing streak against that team from Westwood), Warriors and the Bearcats, worry about yourselves, have fun and lots of good luck to you.

Volleyball to play in Hawaii tournament
Malik Lee
The Matador women's volleyball team will head to Honolulu, Hawaii to participate in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Volleyball Challenge hosted by University of Hawaii, beginning Sept. 8.
The Matadors(2-4) will play tonight against No. 10 UCLA at 4:30 p.m. On Friday the team will play No. 7 Hawaii at 7 p.m., and then on Saturday finish up tournament play against Cincinnati, scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
The Bruins(3-0) opened their seasonin Reno, Nevada, participating the Sand/SBC tournament, making eash work of their opponents and winning all three matches.
The No. 7 UH Rainbow Wahine(2-3) are coming off wins over No. 8 USC and Western Michigan, with a loss to No. 4 Penn State that ended a 39-match home winning streak. UH was able to sustain its top-10 ranking even though it dropped three out of five games.
The Cincinnati Bearcats(1-2) struggled in their opening weekend of play, winning only one game in the New Mexico State tournament. The team's only victory was against Texas-Pan American in straight sets sandwiched betweenlosses to host New Mexico State and Tulsa.
CSUN is coming off a challenging weekend winning one game and losing two in the Pepperdine Classic. The were, however, able to beat tournament host No. 25 Pepperdine.
This season, the Matadors are led on offense by freshman Jenn Probert with 80 kills and Dalra Donaldson who has 70 kills. The majority of assists come from freshman Kayla Wright, who has set 266.
CSUN has received quality serving from Val Kepler, who has notched wight aces and Harmony Burdine, Kellye Hanson, and Amy Hultner, who all have five. Jamie Crawford lead the team in digs this season with 149, averaging 5.73 per match.
Fourth year head coach Jeff Storke leads a young Matador team operating with four junioirs, three sophomores and ten freshmen. The Matadors will need to play their best volleyball if they hope to sneak away with a winning tournament record.
The game against Hawaii can be heard at uhathletics.hawaii.edu/broadcast.html.

Anyone in Hawai'i will be recording the matches that will be broadcasted on KFVE? I'd like to see the matches and I'll send a videotape/cd for you to make copies.
Good luck CSUN!

UCLA dominated the series with Hawaii early, but Hawaii has won more recently. I started watching in 1995, Hawaii beat UCLA in 95, 96, lost in 97, won in 98, 99, 00, lost 2x in 01 and won again in 02, 03 and 04. We'll see if they can make it 4 in a row this year.

Anything? I talked to one parent and they told me that UCLA won the first game but don't know the exact score.
