Hmm. I thought this post was about "why people love watching TED talks about sports", as opposed to actually being a TED talk about why people love watching sports. However, since I do NOT love watching TED talks in general, I haven't watched this to confirm my new hypothesis.

I tried, I really tried, but I just can’t do it. I don’t like the structure that they use for these talks, the storyworld and conflict are too slow to develop, and the cadence in which these talks are delivered feels like getting stabbed in the skull with a dull knife. So I probably shouldn’t comment without having all of the information, but as someone who makes a hobby and in part a living by telling stories, I’m going to say that I reject any premise that says people like or dislike any particlar type of story. If you want people to pay attention to your subject learn how to tell better stories and for godsake don’t use TED talks as your model. Either that or hire an expert to tell your stories for you.

Thank you for sharing. Whenever we lament the lack of coverage Women's Volleyball gets, we need only to watch this to know part of the reason why.

Women’s basketball isn’t entertaining. And they already get way more publicity than they warrant by crying sexism. Not sure I’m on board with her premise.

Why do people love watching sports? Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Ill also add that spirited debate, vitriol, and having villains make sports more entertaining.
Good luck posting on VT and saying an athlete entered the season out of shape. Or was a recruiting bust. Or seems like a bad teammate.
And no national broadcaster dared to say that maybe it hurts a female athlete’s legacy to choose to sit out at the biggest stage. I think female athletes are treated like fragile beings that need protection and it hurts women’s sports.
Just my two cents.

What is a "WNBA activist?"

Women’s basketball isn’t entertaining. And they already get way more publicity than they warrant by crying sexism. Not sure I’m on board with her premise. Her talk makes a lot more sense knowing that she's a WNBA activist. Promoting women's sports in general is a lot different than promoting the WNBA. I watched her talk, and I found that she doesn't really seem to get it in general, or maybe she's so biased that she doesn't want to. Americans have had ample opportunity to watch the WNBA since its inception in the mid-1990s, and we're mostly not interested. As you said, the WNBA actually gets more publicity than it probably should. I think Fagan and others would be better off putting their efforts in other women's sports like volleyball, softball, soccer and hockey. Those sports don't have a benefactor like the WNBA does with the NBA, but I think they all have more potential for viewership in the long term than the WNBA does.

What is a "WNBA activist?" You know the girl in Mean Girls who keeps trying to make “fetch” a thing? It’s like that but for the WNBA.

Do you mean she is a fan of the WNBA? “Fans” of the Cleveland Browns don’t go around pleading with people to watch the Browns and trying to convince them that it’s entertaining. Dayan is a former basketball player trying to grow the WNBA. Like Kathy DeBoer does for volleyball. And Kathy is great! But I don’t go to her for an impartial perspective on the sport.

Sure they do, but the average Cleveland browns fan doesn't get a TED talk. Journalists talk about the sports they like all the time. I've seen Pat Forde and Dan Wolken tweet repeatedly about how great women's college volleyball is the last couple years. Does that make them activists, too?

FWIW, I don't really understand why people don't watch women's sports. I watch them, so I imagine I'm not the key audience those leagues are trying to flip. I enjoy women's basketball, both college and WNBA, but then again I really love basketball in general. I love women's soccer so much I'm going to New Zealand this summer for the World Cup. I don't watch much NWSL, mostly because the most interesting games are happening in the European leagues and that's never on my TV. As I said, though, I'm not the typical American sports fan.
