Just heard Charlie Wade on the radio. He said he hasn't read the article but is not surprised at her comments. He says that Heather has always been blunt and one to just tell it like it is. He looks to her comments as more motivational than anything else. Says that she has been very helpful in practice especially with middle blockers in improving technique, correcting mistakes etc. and that she is at every match actually taking notes that she goes over with the coaches at practice. I heard this interview also. It seems she told the coaches what she thinks, I'm disappointed that she decided to take it to the media. I think this interview may help Hawaii's opponents as well if they read this article. I understand your point but I have to think that all the teams are lacking in one area. It is the beginning of the season. The article was spot on and fans should realize the truth. I hear the announcers on TV and its all a love fest for UH. Never have they commented honestly about the play and the players. My wish is that this article will make people accountable so they can't hide anymore. If the truth hurts then change it.

Thinking back I remember she was interviewed between games 2 and 3 of the UCLA match. She didn't come out and say it of course but I got the distinct impression that she was unimpressed with their level of play during that match.

She also mentioned how the difference at that point of the game was Hawaii's OH's not able to put the ball down where UCLA's OH's were. She hinted a little about the M2 position as she praised Prince during the interview and had nothing to say of the M2.

She's comparing the college game to the international game. That's like comparing high school to college. However, if Hawaii wants to beat Nebraska they better play like Brazil and speed the offense up.

I agree with you, YellowC. The comparison isn't fair but I hope the Hawaii team takes the criticism and uses it to realize that there IS a lot of room for improvement. Although they shouldn't be expected to play at the international level, they will need to raise the level of their game to compete with, and beat, the likes of the top 5 collegiate teams.

Bown in so many words did say that she understands the level of play is different from international to college. What she was trying to say, is that UH has to find the fire and play with focus and purpose. She is saying that with the potential to do so much more, UH will have to be better or it will not be competing for any national championship.

I'd say based on the following quote, she knows exactly what she was comparing Hawaii to: "What I see in the Stan Sheriff Center leaves a lot to be desired," says Bown, who is a volunteer coach at Mid-Pacific Institute. "This is the most passive I've ever seen a UH team. I didn't see much of them last year, but people said they had a lot of heart and I don't see that this year. And, I don't see them celebrating as a team."

I think Bown doesn't want the Wahine to end up like the US National team in Athens. Wasn't that their problem... no fire... no celebrations. Huge Egos. Losing to the Domincan Republic. Logan Tom and Keba Phipps not putting balls away etc. etc.. They're lucky Cuba let them get out of pool play.

There's nothing wrong with using international level of play as a goal. It's like pep pills in college: you aim high, not low.

Heather Bown hit a lot of good points. And after the Washington match (first night), I think her criticisms hit the spot right on the head -- and you could really see what she was talking about!
I'd like to see more fire, more energy in their feet. Just a sparkle -- seems like they lose that energy once they're down -- now that's a problem!
It's good they bounced back in the third set, but not good enough. This team needs to focus more, believe in themselves, strive to improve, and have some fun out there.

Or face reality that this Wahine team is really not that goodl that it has key pieces to the puzzle missing. They not only do not have an OH1, but also an OH2, an MB2, and OPP, and a LIBERO Shoji is confident with. That's 5 of 7 positions!

I'd bet Bown would make a good coach. All that experience with Kathy Gregory, Dave Shoji, Toshi Yoshida, and her Italian coaches. Also, a very personable sort and very disarming with her high-pitched voice. The recruits will be drawn to her like dogs to fire hydrants. At the very least, she'll be a good assistant. Some lucky program is going to snatch her up.
