Can’t wait to catch a replay of my two favourite teams against each other.
I see that two of the sets were really lopsided though, unfortunately. Did Canada perform poorly, or was Japan just too darn good?

I think Hoag's time as a starter has passed. It passed back in like Tokyo, but Canada seems to have missed the message. He was instrumental in coming in off the bench (for Perrin) against Cuba and helping Canada secure the Olympic berth, but agreed, he can’t be a starter at this level if you want to be a top-tier contender.

Did Canada perform poorly, or was Japan just too darn good?A little bit of both, depending on the set. Japan outlasted Canada on the long rallies and also served extremely well. Canada made the mistake of letting Nishida get into the game. He wasn't too hot for the first 1.5 sets. Canada had some poor plays here and there that cost them. Scwarz is still adjusting to OOS sets. Currie had some great digs. Marr had a really great game but couldn't get aby consistent help.

Agreed, but sadly for Canada there’s virtually no one to replace him (someone please tell me I’m wrong!!) I think Loeppky is the obvious choice but I don’t know if he is the answer. Not sure if Barnes is still on the team/can come back but would love to see him again. But also we need an OPP who can terminate a la Gavin Schmidt. Man I miss him

Man I miss him Loeppky, from what I’ve seen has a ceiling lower than (USA’s) Jaeschke, who I also don’t think moves the needle much as a starter on the international stage. I’m most intrigued by what Hofer can bring on the left-side, both in terms of passing and terminating. Sharone Vernon-Evans was looking like the bonafide OOS terminator to replace Gavin Schmitt on the right-side, but I don’t know why he fell off the national team map.

He played great at TWU, has the height, and is still young so he has a high ceiling. Hope we get to see him play some matches this week. I was going to bring up Vernon-Evans, but I haven’t been following the Maple Volleys closely to know what his current status is with the national team. He was error-prone but when he was in the zone, he can go on a kill streak. Anyone know how he’s been playing in Japan? Hard to believe his level of play is the reason he’s being left out of the national team rosters

Here we go with this Bolt6 yup, I don't trust Bolt6 at this point. But I wonder if that was just a mistake by the r1 since the canadian players or coaches didn't object to it. Though gotta say, I was relieved that Canada did take that set just in case.
But damn, this line tech is suspect.

Pretty clean day for all the favored teams.
Hoping Jaeschke and Hanes and the other two middles get some work against China.....Heck our complete 2nd team ...why not.
Two days off will do wonders for Anderson Smith and Russell.

OK China, we can do this. I just need you to beat Germany, Canada, and maybe Slovenia. I know that last one is a big ask but if you beat the other two, there's a chance you avoid regulation.
Canada, OTOH, is in danger (if China does its job) of winning like 1 match -- Bulgaria. Slovenia is playing too good with this 3 OH line-up and getting past full-strength France, Netherlands, Italy, and Poland is near impossible. Week 1 was crucial for them.
