What's wrong with Mafua having a little competition? Both she and Miyashiro could red shirt and compete with each other. Are you that much convinced that Mafua is a sure-bet starter that Kamana'o was as a freshman? Not fully sure what you mean by this. Mafua will have plenty of competition when she enters at UH. My point is that the 2006 roster does not need 4 players on scholarship who are training to be setters. Hence, Shoji probably didn't go after her because he was going after another setter in 2006. Without Miyashiro in 2006, Shoji would have Kamanao and Thurlby as seniors and Mafua would still likely redshirt that year. And Mafua will get some competition when Shoji brings in another setter (either freshman or transfer) in 2007.

I think like the article states Shoji was out of scholarships for the year. If she wanted to go to Hawaii she would have to walk-on. I certainly don't blame her going away if UW was going to offer her a scholarship.
Hawaii's immediate need was at outside hitter, not setter so that's whey Houston and Mason were recruited. I guess Shoji wanted someone who could contribute and play right away, rather than someone who would have to sit on the bench for two years.
I'm sure Shoji is looking for another setter in the 2007 class, as you always need 2 setters.

I certainly don't blame her going away if UW was going to offer her a scholarship. The scholarship issue is interesting. Previous posts here reported that she was getting a full ride from UW. The article seems to say something different: "UW came into the recruiting game late but didn't promise a scholarship initially. McLaughlin was waiting to see if All-American Sanja Tomasevic would be granted an extra year of eligibility due to the war in her in native Serbia-Montenegro that delayed her college enrollment. Tomasevic ended up with another year and Miyashiro eventually ended up with some financial aid from UW. " If UH didn't have a scholarship to offer, it was good for Miyashiro to look elsewhere. We thought she ended up with a scholarship from UW. Good deal! But now it sounds like something altogether different -- not a scholarship, but "some" financial aid. Being from out of state, she better have gotten "some" substantial financial aid to help with the out-of-state tuition, especially if she was initially offered a scholarship.
