Nice win for the Badgers. I never thought that they wouldn't win today, even when things weren't going so well in the middle of the second game. The scary thing is that the Badgers didn't play as well as they are capable of doing in some facets of the game and still were able to get the sweep. Most notably, they didn't pass as well as they did in the other matches this weekend, and they weren't quite as good in picking up offspeed hits. UCLA, on the other hand, played similarly to how they had in the previous matches, in my opinion. The Bruins are trying to find a lineup and didn't pass all that well. Spicer made some nice sets, but she was running around a lot due to off passes or shaky ball control. On the positive side for UCLA, Barba played well offensively, as she did yesterday, and Sather hit the ball with more authority than she did in the two earlier matches.
As for the Badgers, Reineke played the best match I have ever seen her play. Meriwether just couldn't get going, as she was having a big problem with Taylor being camped on her most of the time. Also, Simpson had a great block against her on an overpass. The Badgers didn't get to set Shaw a lot, but she sure made the most of her sets. I thought the outsides did fine, considering the Badgers were out of system quite a bit when the ball went to them. The Bruins did a good job of digging Jeffers, but the Badgers just had a lot more firepower overall. Also, credit Simpson for running the offense pretty well and making big plays for the Badgers. She has stepped it up from last season, especially on defense, and just seems very confident on the court.
Anyway, I am really pleased with how the Badgers played this weekend. Their defense is much improved, and they have a lot of firepower, as well as improved depth. I am looking forward to Minnesota next friday; should be a good match.
