Wisconsin vs. UIC | Saturday, August 19, 2023 1 PM Central | UW Field House Madison, Wisconsin |
Let's get this party started!
Follow Along 🎧: Fox Sports 1070 AM Madison 📊: StatBroadcastPlayers to WatchWisconsin will be rocking the 6-2 again, likely pairing Ashburn/Robinson and Hammill/Smrek. We anticipate Booth/Crawford at middle and GG back at libero. The only question is on the left, where we have TTA, Orzoł, and Franklin completing for the two starting spots. UIC also returns most of their pieces from 2022: their leading scorer is 5-9 senior OH Martina Delucchi. Also likely to start are setter Sohila Wafeek, middles Zahria Woodard & Becca Oldendorf, and libero Jaclyn Oblena. HistoryThe series: Wisconsin leads 1-0. Last meeting: Sept. 21, 2002 - the Badgers won 3-0 in Madison. Did you know…? The UIC Flames are named in honor of the Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871. On that same day, northeastern Wisconsin was incinerated by an even larger blaze, the Peshtigo Fire, which burned 1.2 million acres of forest and killed upwards of 2000 people - more than five times the death toll of the Great Chicago Fire. Don't play with fire, kids.

That's some of the best linking trivia yet, Rainbow!
I had forgotten the Peshtigo and Chicago fires were the same day. But I'm even more amazed that UIC named themselves after the latter!
Then again, I guess the men's pro soccer team is also called the Fire, isn't it.

Unfortunately, the Lahaina fires and the stories of people taking refuge in the ocean has brought Peshtigo to mind for me, where people were badly burned and barely survived *while* in the river, and a few people died despite jumping into a water tank/well that ended up boiling them to death.

Yeah. These fires are truly terrible tragedies for the people involved. I'm a bit surprised anyone would celebrate their memory in the nickname of a team. I mean, I know fire is a sports metaphor, but these are not metaphorical stories, and they are not uplifting. They are horrific. Would anyone in Paradise, CA or Lahaina call their future sports teams the fire? I don't think so. All I feel is sadness when I hear that name now I know it's reference. Maybe it's just me though.

Feeling very serious for game day! Do we know if Grace will be doing any commentary for the BTN this season? She did a good job at it last year. Also thanks for making the thread!

Partnered with one of the Tapps, I think. That’s great for her! Hope we can snag her away for at least one game though 😂

Jon on air right on time!
Sheff NCAA rules have changed to allow an extra game as an exhibition. With the large squad, decided to take advantage. Also get used to playing in front of a crowd. Europe trip can force people further apart or bring them together. The latter was the case this year. Lucky to have a really positive group the last two trips. Temi and Sarah have barely had a chance to be on the court at the same time. Have a huge amount of potential on the block.
White: A huge emphasis in preseason is getting positive teaches. Can block for points, but now need to make digging easier for back row. UIC has 25 players on their squad. Makes scouting tricky! Will force team to adjust on the fly.

Temi with a roll shot, that almost should be illegal. Julia with an ace. 11-6 Bucky, time out UIC.
