Important 3-1 win for Dominicana. Nothing really to lose tomorrow - yes a sweep loss will cost some points, but it'll be off-set by taking care of business in their other matches. A win just propels them with momentum into the Olympic Qualifier and even more ranking points if they don't win the IOQT.

I don't think Marte is a horrible choice. I'd prefer Brenda or Yonkaira, but, given the circumstances, I liked the game that Marte played.

I actually anticipated the match would go like this. The starting six have barely played since the VNL (some much-needed injury time off was needed for a couple of players). They were rusty against Mexico and Puerto Rico and I was hoping they would shake off some of the rust, but they didn't. On a positive note, I know this team can play much better.
King did not play well especially early on. Her set location and pace have been way off at times and you can't trap set too close to the net against the Dominican. Watching her force it to Van Ryk over and over again is unacceptable and she needs to learn to set the middle to take pressure off the pins. Fortunately, Van Ryk finally found her groove more in set 4 (especially with Gray out).
King needs to set the middle more, especially for Maglio. There is no excuse for the low sets to Maglio or her to avoid her when the pass is decent. She can't expect the connection to magically be there when she never sets her.
White should have been subbed out early in the match. I was hoping Van Buskirk would make an appearance. White had a decent VNL, especially in the latter half, but she was ineffective this tournament. She was frequently late to the pins and misread the set too often. She had one or two decent blocks and blockbacks but her offense has also been non-existent (partly because of the sets or lack thereof). Maglio however, has been playing well offensively, so it is baffling why King refuses to set her. Smh that Winzer would not put in Van Buskirk or Ogums for White after knowing how ineffective White has been. At least give the other two middles a chance, even if for a short time.
I have been quite happy that Mitrovic has been getting the start over Howe (which should have happened two years ago and it is an unexpected surprise that Winzer would finally do it). However, Mitrovic didn't have a great start to this match and is always on a short leash. Howe did come in with some good energy and did well. I still prefer her coming off the bench rather than starting. Why Mitrovic was subbed in and then right out in set 4 was a choice.
I don't know yet if Gray had an injury that warranted sitting her off for the match, or if Winzer just made a Winzer decision to just stick with Savard to start the fourth set. I was happy that Savard came in with some good energy and effort for her home Quebec crowd. She had some great plays. However, if Gray was good to go after a minor injury, she should have been on the court. It wouldn't be the first time Winzer just made the choice not to play her when she was ready to go.
I would have liked to see Livingston with the team as I think she has more upside than Savard. I miss her as a service sub too.
Finally, Winzer is just not good. She has got some experience and improved in some areas. However, I would like to see her get a little creative with the Canadian offense and take a few risks. She has some solid players but she doesn't always utilize them well and she never coaches them up. In-game decisions are sus too.
I think that about sums it up. Canada needs to get their stuff together quickly or the Dominican and Netherlands are likely going to the Olympics over them.

Who doesn't love a DR vs USA matchup?
It's been too long since we've seen one... or three.

Canada over Cuba 3-1. Disappointing match. They are still playing badly but at least managed the win. Serve-receive, passing, setting all bad. At least they pulled out the win but they lost more ranking points. Alexa did not play. And, jeez the stats are so bad... Maglio had at least six blocks and is down for 3. She was robbed in each of the past two games....half of them were solo stuffs... it shouldn't be hard. At least White had some blocks this match because she hasn't been getting blocks. Today she had 6 and at least was credited for them! It would have sucked to see her finally getting some blocks and not getting any credit. Same thing with Aleksic from the Serbia match the other day. How hard is it to give these players the blocks they deserve? The players might not care about the credit, but they work so hard and shouldn't have to fight for their points. At least they don't mess up the kills quite as much.

With Canada, if any of the main four (Gray, Van Ryk, Maglio and King) are out then the team takes a significant drop. Like we need all 4 of our world class players to compete well or we start dropping sets to teams like Cuba and probably lose to mid teams

USA-Puerto Rico never had their stats added for final six.
