While there had been an investigation of the company, Shokin's former deputy, Vitaliy Kasko, has said that it was dormant at the time of Joe Biden's intervention. (The former US ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, and the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, George Kent, testified in Trump's impeachment inquiry that Shokin was corrupt; the US and its allies had made a coordinated effort to oust him.)

It's true that Joe Biden leveraged $1 billion in aid to persuade Ukraine to oust its top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, in March 2016. But it wasn't because Shokin was investigating Burisma. It was because Shokin wasn't pursuing corruption among the country's politicians.

As European and American diplomats pressed Ukraine to clean up its corruption, they focused on Shokin's leadership of the Prosecutor General's Office, which he took over in February 2015.
Mike Carpenter, who served as a foreign policy adviser to the then-vice president, told USA TODAY that Shokin "never went after any corrupt individuals at all" and "never prosecuted any high-profile cases of corruption."

Burisma Holdings was not under scrutiny at the time Joe Biden called for Shokin to be removed, per the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, an independent agency that has worked closely with the FBI.

Trump meets with convicted criminals all the time. And being on the Board of any company is one of the most sought after perks by just about everyone. It would be good to strengthen conflict of interest laws, but Clarence Thomas might not like that. |

Archer and Heinz (Kerry's stepson) were college roommates and business partners going back almost twenty years. Hunter Biden was also a partner, but Heinz left the company before HB took the Burisma position. Archer worked on Kerry's presidential campaign and obviously knows the family very well. Archer was not a "convicted felon" when he allegedly met with Kerry. His arrest was years later. That about cover it? On one hand, I'm almost dumbfounded that Fox and conservatives in general still keep trying to bring back the Joe Biden/Burisma/Viktor Shokin conspiracy theory, which had been irrefutably debunked years ago, but on the other hand I see it quite obviously is still effective clickbait with people like our very own VT Deplorable, so I guess Fox will just continue to squeeze the story until there's nothing left but a dry husk. |
